Default Update Blackberry storm via BES Enterprise

Please Login to Remove!

Hello...

We currently have an Enterprise Server {4.1 sp6}. We have 5 users testing the server.. 3 users have the 8830's and 2 have the 9530's. I am currently interesting in how to push updates to the 9530's but would like to know more about the process in general.

I have been searching around and all I have found is references to having a BES admin update the software. Since that is me... I have a bit of research to do

1st question. - Is is possible to push the 9530 update to the phone at this time?

2nd question - If not...does anyone know when/where that update will be available?

3rd question - In general..where do I get the files for these updates? Do I get them from verizon {our current provider} or from RIM?

4th question - I have pushed a few different applications out to our phones... is the process similar/or different from this? How so?

If anyone just wants to bypass all of these questions and just point me in the right direction... that would be greatly appreciated Any information would be very useful. Thank you.

This gets asked like once a month and presently you cannot push OS updates. I believe it was slated for SP 7 but likely now part of BES 5.0 (Q209)

What I do is index the OS files and use Web Desktop Manager as a point for users to update their device. If you are not locked down and users have admin rights on their pc you could just tell them to go to BlackBerry - Update your Device Software

I monthly check under the support section / download then check our carriers for updates.

You should see an Upgrades tab in your BES Manager to push these updates to the 9530, see attached pic. The OS is pulled by the device from the RIM infrastructure, so nothing really to do by the admin except request it. Cool!

You can pull updates to the 9530 by going into Options -> Advanced Options -> Wireless Upgrade.

tried this on both a BES provisioned and a non-provisioned 9530, upgraded them both. 14mb download to the device, worked pretty well, it even backed itself up and restored everything.

just "push" them an email with some instructions

For what it's worth, I'm able to push OS updates to devices. The requirements as I understand them is BES 4.1.5 + and device OS 4.5 +. Mind you, this JUST started working yesterday.

I contacted RIM support with some similar questions and unfortunately, it was a dead end. I believe the feature is new and there's some mis-information out there about it. The RIM support rep told me that OS's that are modified slightly by the carriers would not be available through the BlackBerry infrastructure. We're mostly a Verizon house and seeing as that their OS's are only available for download on their hosted web server (not RIM's webservers), I assumed this is what he meant. Honestly, I was really skeptical of his suggestion.

According to the Wireless Software Upgrades Admin Guide, "The BlackBerry® Enterprise Server contacts the BlackBerry Infrastructure once daily to check for updates to the software upgrade packages." After reading this, I continued to check the BES for available packages for the storm devices we had. Sure enough - they popped up last night and pushing the OS update was a cinch. All the other relevant information I needed I found in this guide:

Currently, the only available update is .75 for the 9530's on my BES.

What about for BES 4.0? We have about 20 users, two use 9530's and the wireless upgrade request fails on the storms. Verizon said it was something we had to "turn on" but no where in the 4.0 does it mention upgrades.

Any suggestions?

it is for 4.1.6, sorry 4.0 is not really supported anymore.

One time upgrade for 999.00 will work.

Default BlackBerry Professional Software

Is BlackBerry Professional Software Version: 4.1.4.3 capable of pushing software updates to the handhelds?

When I view the updates for Professional on RIMs site the latest update/download currently available is 4.1.4B. I am trying to perform the Wireless Software Updates and would simply like to confirm if it is possible?

Not at this time unless you want to shell out about 2800.00 USD for upgrade to full BES which has SP6.

Default BPS Wireless Inquiry

Thank You for the clarification.

One of our users has attempted this himself on his workstation via the following url:

worldwide.blackberry.com/update/blackberrystorm.jsp

When he attempts to perform the upgrade he receives the following notice.

“can’t update using this system because the device is activated on a Blackberry Server – contact administrator”

Any thoughts about what I can do to bypass this and perform the upgrade manually? Is there a BPS policy stopping it?

Any and all thoughts will be helpful. Thank You.

That's a policy setting on the BES. The default setting is to block upgrades unless they're "from" the BES.
