I spent a "considerable" amount of time attempting to get my 8700 to synch via Bluetooth, so I'll throw in my two cents for those of you still struggling...hopefully it helps.
I've tried 2 external USB Bluetooth adapters and one internal bluetooth adapter, and only managed to get one to work (the internal one, oddly enough).
From what I've learned, if you can't make Windows XP SP2 recognize your Blackberry device using the NATIVE Microsoft Bluetooth drivers, and then have the Blackberry visible in the Windows Bluetooth menu accessible via Control Panel...then stop wasting your time. I tried using BlueSoliel and other software based bluetooth radios, and it simply will not operate reliably...or in most cases, even at all.
I followed the stickied method of putting the Bluetooth adapters in the bth.inf file for all 3 devices, and only the internal Toshiba Bluetooth device on my Sony Vaio managed to work using this method. The two external adapters I tried to use on a separate laptop simply would not get going.
If and when you manage to get your bluetooth adapter working with the Windows XP SP2 drivers, here are the steps I took to consistently get the device to play nice with Desktop Manager:
1 - As mentioned, ensure the device is recognized and connected to XP's Bluetooth control panel menu under "devices". Ensure you've set both profiles to "trusted always", such that the PC and Blackberry will pair without needing to prompt you.
2 - Install Desktop Manager. I'm using an older 4.1 version purposefully because it doesn't prompt you with a "do you wish to connect to your blackberry using Bluetooth technology" message every time it sync's (for more on this, see below - copy this URL, I can't post it due to my low post count): blackberryforums.com/bluetooth-connection/33551-how-can-i-sync-bluetooth-without-pressing-yes-every-time.html?highlight=bluetooth+prompt
3 - Depending on the version of Desktop Manager you've installed, open either the Blackberry Desktop Manager OR the Blackberry Device Manager, and enable Bluetooth. This will be a checkbox available in the options for Connection Settings. If the checkbox is greyed out, you didn't follow step 1, and the XP SP2 drivers are not installed. When you enable the bluetooth checkbox, click on 'Configure Bluetooth', and go through a secondary pairing process that pairs the Blackberry's XP profile with Desktop Manager.
4 - After step 3 is completed, the "Connection:" dropdown in the Connection Settings window should now have an item that says "Bluetooth-PIN:XXXXX". Select this, and click OK.
This should now permit you to run Intellisync and other apps to connect to Desktop Manger via Bluetooth.
My Blackberry shows no services in the PC BT profile, and the PC shows no services for the Blackberry BT profile...so I'm not sure this is relevant for those having issues.
To those unable to get the SP2 drivers to work with your bluetooth adapter - a word to the wise: don't waste any more time on it...I lost many days of my own time discovering what a futile exercise it is. The Blackberry will only sync reliably using the native Windows XP SP2 drivers.
