Default "Silent Mode" Switch On 8300?

Please Login to Remove!

Ok...I have searched to no avail. One more n00b question...but I need to know.

Is there a quick and easy way to put the 8300 into "silent mode" without going into Profiles and jacking with that?

My Treo has a switch on top of the phone that quickly and efficiently silences the ringer and puts the phone into vibration-only on calls. Is there a key on the keypad that does this on the 8300, or a fast and easy way to achieve this?

Thanks.

top button mutes the current ring/alert, but it resets after that. I have mine vibrate twice before the tone giving me ample time to hit the mute button if I choose to.

Try holding down the top mute button. Works on the 8700c to change to vibrate profile and holding down again will change back to normal. Don't have an 8300 to test with, but worth a shot.

I have my convenience keys set already (left: calendar, right: address book) that they work great for me...so I'm not willing to change just for an occasional need for silent ring.

I never noticed the mute button on top of the phone (Duhhhhh... ), so I'll try that.

Thanks guys...

I am a converted Treo 680 user. I did what the last user mentioned and switced one of the side convenience buttons to open up profiles so I can quicly switch to vibrate. after a day, I found that it is just as fast to click the profiles and switch to vibrate as it was to switch the top key on the Treo, and I have now switched my convenience key to gmail!!! You will get used to it!!!

Exclamation Standby Mode != Mute

For the record, I just tried this and the 8300 just went into "Standby Mode." I called my phone from a landline, and it rang through loud and clear.

From what I gather, Standby Mode is really just a Keyboard Lock. It doesn't shut off the radio hardware, calls still ring in loud - the only thing that happens is your keyboard/buttons are locked until you press the Mute button again.

I think your best bet for a quick profile change would be to assign a side convenience key. HOWEVER, to the original poster: Did you know if you just hit the Green Answer key from the home screen, it instantly loads the phone app PLUS you can start typing in someone's name and it pulls their address book information in real-time! All phone numbers you have entered in the address book auto-populate and are highlighted. I simply don't need to use the Address Book application anymore once I found this, and perhaps this is what you need instead of having an entire convenience key assigned to the Address Book application.

Bummer. You would think that RIM would think of something more efficient.

Save a step! Just start typing your contact from the home screen. I haven't used an "address book" for years.

If you have any BlackBerry case the phone will switch profiles automatically whenever you put it in or take it out of the case. I too switched from a Treo and at first missed the switch until I found out about the automatic profile switch. You can have it vibrate or go into completely silent mode. I use vibrate when in the case and ring when out. Works great.

I use the Vodafone Today theme on my 8300, and there is an icon you can scroll to that allows you to change profiles quickly.

The button on top of the device is in perfect position to hit to stop the ring. Use vibrate/ring and it will vibrate first giving you a chance to stop the ring.

There is no doubt the Blackberry is not a Treo! Thank GOD!

Default All you need to do is Tap the "F" key......

.....as long as you have the "dial from home screen" turned off you just have to tap the F key and the ringer preferences pops up.

In fact, all of the quick keys that work on the 8800 are the same on the 8300 with the "dial from home screen" set to off:

- A = address book
- L = calendar
- F = Ringer tones
- B = bookmarks
- M = messages
- T = Tasks
- O = options
- K = puts in lock mode
- V = saved messages
- C = send message
- S = search
- W = Blackberry web browser
- R = Set alarm
- U = Calculator
- H = help

What about that key with the Dollar sign and the vibrating icon? That key does not do anything if I hold down the alt key.

It's not a vibrating icon. It's the speakerphone icon. Push it when you're in a call to activate speakerphone.

Default The Pearl does it so nicely

Its amazing that the Curve does not have that feature the OP was after. I just started playing with my new Curve and was looking for that exact feature (hence I ended up in this post).

On my pearl I hold down the # - key and it goes to Silent mode. Hold down * and it goes back to normal. Simple and quick. Boy, I will miss that!

Edit: Correction: Holding down # is a toggle for vibrate on and off. Holding down * is the keyboard lock on and off - on the Pearl that is.

Me too, I miss it that from my old pearl as well.. but on some themes you can scroll up to the icon on the home screen and enter it from there... I use the tmo blue theme though so I now use F and remember what I loved about the 8700 so much... the shortcuts to EVERYTHING.

My side buttons are camera and media player... might change them but im hesitant, I use them tons.

Wirelessly posted (7100g: BlackBerry7100/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/122)

My ancient 7100 works the same as the pearl ie hold down # in the home screen to toggle vibrate mode - almost as good as my old Treo 600. Must be a suretype thing.

Can't believe that a keyboard shortcut from the home screen doesn't exist on the full keyboard models.

Cheers,

P.
