Guys,
I have tried and failed to move our 200+ user Database and BES installation to a new server with new name.

Ok here is my setup Lotus Domino 7 with BES 4.1.4 (New Server)
Old Server Lotus Domino 6.5.4 with BES 4.0.6.

Ive been through the upgrade document three times and it still doesnt really make sence...

Is there a quick and simple way to bring across the 200+ users to the new server?

Probably the easiest way for you would be:

1) Upgrade 4.0.6 server to 4.1.4
2) Install 4.1.4 on new server (using temp SRP key) (point to the database that current server is using)
3) Perform a phased migration where you simply drag and drop users from one BES to the other
4) Remove the old server from the DB (and uninstall BES)
5) Replace the temp SRP on the new server with the perm one from the old server
6) Drink fine ale (or lager)

BBAdmin, got any mods to this? I'm a little bit of a fish outta water here

but you then still have the DB running on the OLD Server....

at the moment yes... but i have enabled TCP/IP Network protocols in the installation... so the new server can talk to the existing installation... i just have to upgrade to 4.1.4

Ah, excellent! So, what you should do, is when you setup 4.1.4 on the new server have it install locally ... so you'll have a database shell created. Then, go into the BlackBerry Server Configuration and change the database to point to the remote server.

Once you have all the users moved over; shut down the services; backup the db on the old server; restore the db to the new server and then change the db location in the BlackBerry Server Configuration again and you should be golden.

Just make sure to backup the db before you do anything crazy ... crazy being anything else

ok... the BES is currently 4.0.0 and wont upgrade to 4.1.2 it says something about being a pre4.0 db. Should i install the 4.0.7 service pack??

i thought it was until i checked the support information... it says 4.0.0

but ive been looking in the database (i just came onto this company) and it looks like the previous person has tried updating it as in the ServerDBVersion Table there are 5 entries

4.1.2

4.1.2 Display Version = 4.1.4

Upgrade to at least 4.0.3; I'd just jump to 4.0.7 and then do 4.1.4 from there.

ok cool.... but i have to use the 4.1.2 Update CD then use the 4.1.4 update exe dont i?? i dont have the 4.1.4 update cd...

The alternative would be to get the 4.1 SP4 full release from RIM.

4.0.0 -> 4.0.7 -> 4.1.2 -> 4.1.4

It all seems cool to me. I'm doing an identical move for someone next week (albeit Exchange). My plan is to:

1. Upgrade current 4.0.6 to 4.1
2. Backup existing remote database.
3. Power down old BES (set services to disabled)
4. Install new SQL (local on BES)
5. Install new BES instance (same virtual server name) and allow it to create a new BESMgmt database.
6. Restore remote BESMgmt database over the top of the new locally created database.
7. Service pack new BES instance.
8. Open the BES manager and pray it's full of working users!!!

Doing this myself (Domino) in the near future. Going from dull, old hardware to shiny, new hardware.
Step 1 already done. Need to go from MSDE to SQL after step 2, then back up the new SQL DB.
Just waiting on the new SQL guy to be hired since I don't know jack-crap about it.
