Default BES on Exchange server

Please Login to Remove!

Is their anyone out there who has successfully installed BES directly on the exchange server? If you have I'd like to hear from you, I'm running Exchange 2000, I only have 10 Blackberry users.

Thanks

It must be possible, but it is not advisable. If you have only 10 BlackBerry users you can use a (heavy) workstion for your BES.
The problem with "all on one box" is:

If you have a problem it is more hard to find the reason and to find the solution. RIM doesn't support this (and I think Microsft doesn't support it).
If you need to reboot your BES also your mail system is down. etc

Bob

For such a small amount of users you can use a new high-end desktop (P4, 80GB HD, 512MB RAM as a minimum) and do a "Single Box" install with local MSDE for the config DB.
This solution would be more advisable, because if there's a a problem(during install or post-install) with the BES it does not affect normal client-server mail routing for the users (both BES and non-BES).

Thanks for your help. I steered away from trying to make it work on the exchange and setup a "new" Win2K server and installed the BES on it.

Thanks again

Default Installation instructions help needed

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. Can someone please provide me instructions on how to configure BES on MS Exchange 2003, i.e. a step-by-step guide. I know there's the Blackberry documents but I'm finding it hard to follow these instructions and hoping if someone from this forum has a 'idiots' guide to setting up BES.

Many thanks for any help.

It is not that it will not run. It is not supported, that is all.

I don't know where you got this information but the admin guide clearly show may tips for both installation path.

As stated in previous post, i agree that having BES on its own box may be helpful if it need to be rebooted. But i am not a "fan" of the reboot procedures.

Though the "admin" guide may indicate the all-on-one-box choice, it's not the enterprise recommended approach as far as maintaining service availability, service recoverability, QoS, problem isolation...and others I can't think of at the moment.
This approach would definitely favor organizations on a very tight budget, small # of users and inadeqaute surplus hardware.
Recommendations made to clients or even to your companys' major stakeholders should always attempt to maintain/retain the same level of security as originally present, not adversely affect network performance, easy to maintain/modify, present minimal impact to corporate messaging infrastructure and provide/cater for adequate growth potential with little impact.
As a consultant, those are some of the safeguards I try to always build into any project. You are only good as your last recommedation/project.
