UMA/WiFi Connection drop after some time
Please Login to Remove!
Anyone seeing their WiFi connection dropping all of a sudden and the phone going back to edge even though the WiFi connection is full strength? Just a strange bug I keep seeing in my new 8320....

Yeah its not that... On channel 11 (not conflicting with any other wifi in building.) The wifi icon still states connected, just using edge instead... And the signal strength is great....

I'm seeing something similar with my 8320... after about an hour, the call will drop and the device will say Call Failed. Within a few moments, my Jawbone headset will emit 3 beeps, and the phone will say that the connection to the headset was terminated. The WiFi/UMA signal will eventually come back, but, until I completely power off all radio connections and turn them back on, I'm unable to get my headset to reconnect.
I'm unsure if this is a defect in the phone hardware itself, a bug in the software or a combination of things. It's really annoying at times.

What router are you using for the one hour calls? Have you made multiple calls that this repeats in all on the same router?

I'm using T-Mobile's Linksys router. I was previously using my AirPort Extreme (Draft N), but it wasn't as reliable and connecting a b/g device was throttling down my network, anyways.
The calls, on average, are about an hour in length. It seems anything >50 minutes generally sees this problem occur.
I've managed to have it work somewhat consistently, but, the issue then becomes when the call does fail in the "spectacular fashion" I can't connect to or from any Bluetooth devices until I cycle the radios off and then on, or pull the battery.

What kind of security are you using on the router. Its a shot in the dark but could it be that the 8320 has trouble renewing the WPA key (if thats what your using) as it needs to do every so often depending on your settings.

WPA2... I haven't tried changing to another type yet, but will probably drop the PSK at some point and just use MAC filtering... The H@H router sits outside my DMZ anyways, so I'm not worried about someone poking around behind my firewall.
Back when I was using a Linksys router as my primary router (long before my AirPorts), I remember that the AirPort connection on my PowerBook G4 (at the time) would disconnect briefly while it renegotiated the key. I upped the timeout to 7200 seconds to see if that helps.

Same Problem
I am having exactly the same issue. My preference for network is set to "WiFi Preferred", but the signal switches back to a weak EDGE although the Curve shows full signal on WiFi. Power cycle restores UMA. I have an Apple Airport Extreme.

I also have the same problem and have spent many hours on the phone with T-Mobile BlackBerry support, and the Hotspot@Home support. Neither one has a solution, and their suggestion was that if I was unhappy with the device to just return it.

Same issue for me here and I use the T-Mobile Linksys router. I've tried three different 8320's and they all have the same issues.

Got this today for the 1st time..... ODD....
Was on a UMA call then got booted to EDGE then ( I have a weak EDGE signal where I live) lost EDGE (normal for me) after about a minute... Would not connect back to UMA and needed a reboot.... I image this is a software issue that will be resolved...

I've had it happen to me once or twice. Not too concerned since I think it may be software issue and probably will get resolved. Like any new toy, all the kinks need to be worked out

Uma
Hi Gang,
I have had several things go bonkers with my UMA connection.
Both UMA and EDGE went lower-case and the only way I could get them back to upper was to pull the battery.
We took a trip to a neighboring state and when we came back, UMA would not come on at all. On a hunch, I went into the T-Mobile Linksys router and enabled SSID broadcasting and UMA came back on.
Last night, I shut down the router. This morning I turned it back on and the 8320 would not connect to UMA until I disabled then enabled SSID broadcasting.
Now a question: how to you set up MAC address filtering? I think I did everything right but it will not work for me. I took the mac address of the 8320 from the label under the battery.
Thanks.
Steve

Same exact issues. Using tmo router hooked up to Netgear rangemax router (for increased coverage). I get UMA and then switches back to EDGE randomly even with strong wifi signal. It gets fixed when I disable then re-enable wifi network.

Same Exact Issue Hummmmm???
I'm having the same exact issue with my Curve 8320.....Must be a know issue by now?
I have tried everything- Using the T-Mobile LinkSys router. Even got rid of all my 2.4GHz cordless phones in the house and switched to 5.8GHz
Stays on UMA for long periods and then kick off back to EDGE.
When it kicks off to EDGE have difficult time getting system to find UMA signal again.
Support had know issue with people who had previous BB but this is a new Curve8320.
Tech support has had me do a complete wipe 3 different times….no help????

Same here...... Everything is connected. Its something with the UMA connection autheication.... I take a nap and wake up and no Uma but have wifi. I even can receive emails but no voice..... I am so frustrated.
I going to try to take my security off and have a wireless mac address filter and see the results
