I have a locked Sprint 8830 which someone wants to buy. They are on T-Mobile.

If you unlock this phone - can it be used on GSM networks due to the SIM slot in the phone? Or, is that only for world travel?

Doesn't work on US GSM frequencies. I dont remember the numbers off hand.

I thought as much - but, wanted to confirm. I guess if you travel internationally - you get a SIM from your carrier during that time?

You can use a pre-paid SIM bought in the country to which you're traveling. There should be no unlocking necessary.

Pre-paid SIMS are the cheapest to use when traveling internationally.

But pre-paid SIMS will noy have Blackberry data services. Voice yes. Perhaps some basic data, but not BB data.

Actually, BB data is available on pre-paid sims...it depends on the specific carrier and country. As an example, Mexico´s primary GSm carrier, Telcel, allows prepaid Blackberry data services in various flavors.

I hope this thread is not dead.. i am traveling to to Thailand and the Philippines on feb 25, I have the Sprint 8830 WE.. can use the prepaid sim from those countries in my phone??

If anyone knows which sim cards are the best to buy in Thailand and the Philippines please let me know...

Yes, you can pop in a pre-paid SIM and get voice services. Your Blackberry email will not work unless that pre-paid SIM has a Blackberry data plan attached. I haven't seen those yet.

Most carriers (pre-paid) offer data services. You can always use Opera Mini and GMail, Yahoo, etc for your email and stuff. GoogleMaps for your maps, and any othe rthrid party apps.

So if you buy a prepaid SIM, you can use voice and non-blackberry Data.
