I am looking to upgrade from the old 7100 to the Pearl, but was wondering if I should hold out for an updated version--is there one planned in the near future? I know they introduced the 7105 about a year after the 7100 came out which was supposed to fix some bugs etc...

Basically, is there a better blackberry coming out in the near future?

There might be but no one really knows. The 8800 is a step above the Pearl.

Huh? The 8800 is a totally different phone, for a different market segment, the business user.

And feature for feature the 8800 a step above. In fact it is more limited. For sure, if one is looking at the two phones, the sales rep is not going to say "Well, we have the Pearl here, or for a little more money you can get the better 8800."

My 2 cents.

The short answer is "there will always be better Blackberry on the horizon".

Maybe the CDMA version will be the improvement. Payback for always having wait months after the GSM one arrives.

I'm sure there will be something better coming out. Wait a few months. I'm hoping for a 8800 but seems the 8100 is going to be first.

I'm torn on which one I would want. The Pearl is small and sleek with a camera. The 8800 has the full keyboard and bigger screen.

The 9100 will be the next suretype BB acording to BG, It is rumored to be on its way around the end of the year. You are fairly safe buying the pearl now, by the time the 9100 is available you will probably want to upgrade anyway.
