Default Curve 8900 or BOLD?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

With the 8900 coming to TMO in Feb, I wanted to get everyone's opinion on whether I should upgrade to the 8900 or wait until the BOLD. I've been patiently waiting for a new blackberry ever since I got my curve and seeing the bold and storm come out on other carriers. I've done some research on the 8900 and I'm pretty excited, for those who have a 8900 already, can you provide any insight? Even better, for those who have used the 8900 and BOLD, can you give me your opinion on what worked better for you.

The only thing I see that is different on the BOLD is 3G... Should I really wait for TMO to release a 3G BB, especially when no one knows when TMO would release one and if their 3G network will be stable...

Only about another month and I very well might have a new blackberry in my hands - muahahha!

Thanks!

I'm hearing some really good things about the 8900 coming out in the meetings with RIM I go to. They are saying it will have some of the same features as the Bold but in the Curve size. I would hold off and wait to see it and be hands on with it before you dive in.

Yeah, I would recommend the wait and see approach too. I love my Bold, but I do miss the form factor of my Curve.

I went to att to see the bold, amazing screen resolution, I am currently using the storm also amazing, but to think that there is a device out there (8900) w even better resolution blows me away, this 8900 has been released by other carriers and there are not many complaints here about this phone. unlike the bold and storm those have been nightmares for some people. from what i have seen the bold only advantage is 3g and the processor its just a little faster nothing you will notice or it wont wow you when comparing the two. but i think there is more memory on the 8900 and if you go by these forums you notice its also more stable.

good point on 8900's stability. I've been surfing and reading more up on the 8900 vs the Bold and I'm learning, just like as you were saying, the main difference is 3G. I would love to use my BB on 3G but I can probably live w/o it as my current curve on EDGE works just fine.

I also see that the 8900 advantages are:

UMA - good for me because I get spotty reception down in my garage.
3.2 MP Camera - definitely a nice bump from the 2.0 MP
Form Factor - For me, the smaller the better. Also, if its similar in size as the Curve, my leather belt holster should still work so that is nice to know that I don't have to buy another one.

Overall, I think I've done enough reading and information searching on deciding whether I should get the 8900 or wait for the BOLD,

The final verdict.... 8900.

Counting down the days until Feb 11th, (and crossing fingers that its no more than $199.99 w/ new contract)

Thanks everyone!

Why do american people have to pay that much with a new contract? In Germany we pay like 1xxx8364; up to 50xxx8364; with a new contract + BlackBerry Option etc...

I've used both. There are lots of minor differences between the two devices but IMO only two main ones; 3G and form factor.

Bold is bigger. For me, too big. But if you like a chunky device (150g v 115g) you'll be fine.

The killer difference is 3G. Not that 3G will change your life (both have WiFi after all) but whether 3G helps rather than hinders will depend on coverage where you happen to be. If you're in a solid 5 bars 3G area you'll probably think the extra speed outweighs reduced battery life, but where coverage is spotty, you'll wonder whether the extra weight/complexity/battery drain, plus dropped calls on handover, is worth it.

I think you're right to go for 8900. Mine has turned out to be a really excellent device, rock solid out of the box and streets ahead in day-to-day practicality to either Bold or Storm. Oh, and its 3.2Mp autofocus camera gets five stars too.

not so much cheaper, you pay €20+ each month extra just for the phone and the contract is 2 years. I know because i have e-plus base here in Germany.

Got my 8900 from T-Mobile USA yesterday. I am coming from an 8320. This 8900 is a beautiful little device. I have absolutely no complaints as of yet. However, today, I am heading over to ATT to look at the Bold. Believe it or not, although this 8900 is the same size as my old Curve, it FEELS a LOT smaller. In fact, my tying has slowed considerably. If this doesn't improve without getting cramped hands, I might just need to go to the larger form factor of the Bold.

How much memory (Flash) 8900 has? It has onboard (device) memory too?

I just received my 8900 on Monday after I used the Bold for about a month. The 8900 is definitely smaller in size, including screen and keyboard. Some people were saying that the screen was bigger than the Bold, not so, it has higher resolution but I don't see an improvement in screen sharpness over the Bold, just smaller size. I hardly ever mistyped on the Bold and have made quite a few mistakes on the 8900. I wanted the 8900 for UMA, but I have had two dropped calls on UMA already. I do like it being smaller and lighter and easier to carry. I do like the camera and autofocus! I can see how this 8900 is a Curve. I have owned the 8320 before and the 8900 is a lot like it in size and weight and feel. I do like it and will give it a chance to see if my fingers get used to the keyboard. It is a great phone, but so is the Bold!
