Default Empower email application?? Is it still relevant?

Please Login to Remove!

Is there still a need for this app after the BIS 2.5 upgrade??

The app looks good, and I've contemplated buying it. Any advice?

you know, i'm not really sure. i'd say "yes", but i never used it following actual device-based html email rendering. you would possibly need to choose one or the other to avoid conflict.

i'm satisfied with the 4.5OS html email, but will admit that i miss the color-coded email empower offered. also, the smaller fonts saved me some scrollin'!

I used to use the Empower your Mailbox but found it didn't work very well with 4.5. Empower pretty much told me that they couldn't do anything about it. It ran very clunky and didn't show sent messages. I am on a BES and I found an option in BES 4.1.6 that does the same thing so I no longer need Empower.

Just an update.

I noticed that Empower released an upgrade that will fix the sent messages problem. However it is still clunky. When you go into it the messages folder opens first and then goes to your BES messages. When you hit escape while in BES mailbox it goes to your main messages folder so you have to hit escape twice to get back to the main screen. If your BES is 4.1 Service Pack 5 or later, go to this link where it explains how to add a Mailbox icon just for BES messages.

I'm using Empower on an 8330, BIS, OS 4.5. It has been working very good. I haven't experienced a problem with clunkyness or missing sent icons. Plus, it has options that are not available with the 4.5 email handler. All in all I think the investment is worth it. However, make sure the version of Empower that you install is downloaded from Empower's site. It will detect the phone and OS you have and make sure you get the latest version for your BB.

I tried to download the newest version from the site and it only sent a zip file which could not be opened by the BB. I had to d/l the zip file to my PC and install using DM.

I really don't consider it worthwhile. YMMV if you find some of its features to still be useful.

Besides color coding, what additional features does Empower have? And what's this about clunkyness?? How does that manifest itself?

Thanks guys...;)

He's referring to another app from Empower, their BES Mailbox app, that allows you to see only your work (BES) emails...not the same as the Empower Email Viewer (which anyone, on BIS or BES can use).

I stopped using the Empower Email viewer once I was on OS 4.5 and the HTML email feature was available...there are other features in the empower viewer which are nice (color-coded headers by email account) but decided that didn't matter too much to me.

Alright, thanks everyone. From all of your responses, I gather that Empower, any version of it, is basically unnecessary...is that about right? lol

Actually, I used a similar program and don't know if it was empower. It was written by Zach or Zainey (something like that) while I don't have it installed and I don't need the colored coded email I was really enjoying the ability it gave to turn and email into task. I like and die by my task list and this was a great feature!

I think you mean BBSmart by eZainy. I use it and still like it. I get a lot of email in plain text from people who don't like html email for security reasons. The plain text emails open by default in BBSmart, so they look nice. HTML emails open by default in HTML with the native email app. So either way, I get great looking emails.

i have had my curve (8330) for about 3 months; downloaded and bought the Empower mail viewer about two weeks later, and now experiencing IT policy issues. Error message: "The application_rim_bb_messaging_app has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall and outside the firewall which is not allowed by your IT policy"

I have no IT dept. I am a Company of One. So, is ugrading my OS to 4.5 the only option?

Make sure the Firewall is not enabled, Options -> Security Options -> Firewall, set it disable if it isn't already.
