I have a 9000 and have noticed that different MiniUSB cables connect my 9000 to the computer, but with different results. The main difference appears to be that with some cables, the media card on the phone is not recognized in Windows Explorer, while using other cables it is. Anyone know a reason why that is?

I only ask because the only cables I have that when used the media card appears in Windows Explorer are the cables that came with some other devices (external storage devices). Those cables are too short sometimes, so when I use a longer cable, the media card doesn't show in Windows Explorer.

There are 3 different type mini usb connectors. 5 pin is the BB

Mini b 1,2,3,x,5
Mini ab 1,2,3,x,5
Mini 4p 1,2,3,4


Pin Name Cable color Description
1 VCC Red +5 VDC
2 D- White Data -
3 D+ Green Data +
X ID May be N/C, GND or used as an attached device presence indicator (shorted to GND with resistor)
4 GND Black Ground

Okay, I'll need to somehow figure out what kind of cables I have, I guess. The odd thing is, I know one of the longer cables has to be the cable that came with the BB, yet none of the longer cables allow the media card to be recognized Windows.

Also, I realize I'm not an expert in this, however, the pin examples you showed me for the cable types all appear to be the same except the 5th pin and that pin appears to be for grounding. How would that difference allow the cable to work in every manner except the media card being recognized?

The BB uses a 5pin cable. So the 4pin cable does not give the same status to the PC a device is connected via pin 5. Not sure but the 4 pin cable may be for some camera applications that "look" for a camera and dont expect the PC to initiate the connect.

Thanks again for the assistance. I've verified all my cables are 5 pin and all work with all my peripherals. I guess I'll have to keep searching for the answer to my specific problem.

I checked every cable I have and all blackberry cables that work have 5 pins. The only cable that does not is a 4 pin. Unless you have a bad cable the 5 pin cables should work.
