Using an 8700G connecting to the net w/ via USB cable and EDGE modem on bberry

Whats happening:
I'm able to browse web sites and connect to terminal servers and most everything else I tried to do.
But I'm not able to establish VPN connection to a windows 2003 vpn server.
I'm getting error 721

How I'm trying to connect:
Basic windows dial-up VPN

Other facts:
-The laptop I'm using has connected to this VPN when using DSL or any WIFI,
- A POTS dialup connection will do a VPN tunnel on this laptop too
- I specifically opened TCP port 47 on the firewall


So does TMo block this port, to anyone's knowledge?

I'd like to know this as well as I can't access my companies VPN when I am tethered to my 8700g. Any ideas??

Do you do all of this with the Blackberry Unlimited Add-On package ($19.99) from T-mobile? I want to switch to T-mobile, but only if I can tether (hopfully with bluetooth?) and VPN.

I don't think it's an issue with your BB configuration, I think it's something with your Firewall configuration. PPTP (MS VPN) uses IP Protocol 47, not port 47/tcp, it's a completely different protocol from TCP. Also make sure that you are opening TCP/1722 inbound to your VPN server.

Having done firewall administration for my company for about 6 years, PPTP is still one of the most PITA protocols I have to deal with and for some reason I still make the error of opening 47/TCP before remembering it's protocol 47 rather than a port, so that's my guess here as well.

The server is a 2k3 SBS box. Port forwarding is done thru a wizard that only gives choices for tcp or udp only. Setting both doesn't work. Besides VPN connections always work when I'm hooked up thru wifi.
btw I' thought it's port 1723 not 1722

You need to open PROTOCOL 47 (GRE), not PORT 47.

I don't think the 8700 firewall will allow this.

Sadly, no Bluetooth tethering just yet, but it works pretty well through a USB cable. T-Mobile charges $19.99 for BIS WITH a voice plan. Without a voice plan (data only) I believe is $29.99.

For Blackberry VPN (from Blackberry), check out Remote Access Software :: Remote Desktop for Mobiles. I haven't used it, but I've read on these forums that some people are satisfied.
