Unhappy Turning off email sync but keeping data available

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, all. Apologies if this has been answered before, but I looked through the FAQ and the posts I could find on the topic and nothing seems to quite hit the spot.

I got a Curve 2 days ago, and the novelty of the "always connected" thing is wearing thin. I like being able to check (POP) my email--I really do. I just prefer to deal with it on my PC and would like the BB to download it only when I want it to. This is partially for battery life reasons and partially for personal reasons (I just don't want all this crap on my phone, and the constant blinking is annoying). So far, my options seem to be:

* Remove the accounts.
* Disable the data feature of my network (I still want to use all the goodies on the network--I just want to use them when I want to, not constantly)
* Disguise the functionality by disabling alerts and burying the mail icons.

Is there some sort of simple toggle I'm missing? An "only download email when I send a manual command to do so?"

And remind me not to send my PIN to coworkers who think a 500k picture and a "''Sup?" is an acceptable usage of BBM.

Thanks!

Cormac

The BB is designed for automatic "push" email. For most of us, that is the beauty of the device. We get mail without asking for it. Delete is easy enough.

The only other option I can think of is to configure your PC's email client not to leave messages on the server after downloading to the PC. Some messages might get through, but most would not, IMHO. Doing this would require you to shut down the PC email client when you wish to have email go to the BB.

Options > Mobile Network > Data services (OFF)

This might do the trick.

edit, nevermind, didn't read the post properly.

Yeah. I hate to be a whiner, but everything about the device seems to be push (or faux semi-push, in the case of POP)-centric. I totally see the beauty of this for the enterprise (in fact, I wrote two white papers for RIM on the BES and all the fantastic things it can do), but I'm thinking my quest for personal simplicity might not take the same path as the BB..

You could go into the Audio Profile and edit the notifications for each of your emails so that you don't get any LED flashing or audible alert. You would still need to "deal" with the emails being on the phone, though.

Otherwise, as you initially stated, you can delete the accounts from being sent to your phone.
