MIDI files down control their own volume from what I understand. There aren't any 'loud' ones.

In a matter of speaking. Some devices use a MIDI table to decide what the notes sound like, and some of those are louder than others.

Case in point - you can swap out the MIDI table on a Sony Ericsson P900 with one from a Nokia 6600, and blamo- your ringers are louder.

Each device has it's own little synthesizer in it...

Midi is simply a description of the notes to play on that or any synthesizer (or other MIDI capable instrument).... Midi contains parameters like note volume, duration, velocity, after touch and pitch bend.... so in essence there are "louder midi's" if those notes in question are at volume 128 and they contain frequencies that the device can produce and you can hear.
