Default Wifi on the 8820 (AT&T)

Please Login to Remove!

Ok so AT&T has the 8820 with GPS and wifi, cool! No camera so I can use it at work. cool!

So can someone explain this UMA thing I've been hearing about? Could I talk on my phone using ANY wifi connection? Or is it like T-mobile where I have to pay something extra or it only works at certain "hotspots".

Now I don't expect to be around wifi hotspots much, but it would be pretty sweet if I could use my cell phone for free when I was near one.

So if someone could fill me in on AT&T's policy with the wifi that would be great.

Thanks.

I don't think AT&T has UMA available.

So only T-Mobile offers wifi for calling purposes? And it's 10 bucks a month with a special router required too? Are there any plans for AT&T to offer something similar?

With TMo you don't need to pay the $10 to make it work. However, if you don't subscribe to H@H then the minutes used on UMA are deducted from your minute plan. If you do have H@H then those minutes are free.

The special Router isnt required either. However, an up to date router is. The TMo Router is $50 with a $50 rebate, I believe. Obvious good deal.

The definition of UMA is in a sticky. Note that if your work uses security certificates on their wifi then that is another issue that people will need to deal with.
