Default Why Unlock?

Please Login to Remove!

I checked the faq and I see there are several methods to unlocking a blackberry, but what I want to know is why someone would need to unlock it?

I know with some of my old phones I had to unlock them so I could remove the carrier branded software, would I need to unlock the phone to install a new OS?

The reason to unlock phones is to be able to use the phone on another carriers network.

The procedure they describe about deleting the .alx file is to release vendor specific themes for use. When they talk about Un-locking the phone they are talking about the ability to take the device and use it on another carriers network, let's say you have a Sprint Branded phone and want to switch to At&t. Out of the box the phone will not work on any network but Sprint. When un-locked you can put an At&t SIM in it and use it with them.

Does that help?

Yeah, except that you can't use a CDMA (e.g., sprint) phone on a GSM (e.g., at&t) network.
