The reason it doesn't distinguish the number is because there could be more than one number per name. If you entered two numbers for one contact and you scrolled over to it how would the BB know which number to show you?
If you like only having one number per name I think it would be best that you set up your address book so that each name has one number.
One place where it does distinguish the number is when you check your call log. It will tell you the name of the person who was called or you called and it will indicate with a letter which number was dialed or received by denoting it with a letter:
(W) Work
(H) Home
(M) Mobile
As long as you entered the number in the right place when entering the contact the appropriate letter will show up.

This is the way the Motorola UI is and I think it's disorganized. I like having all of my contact's numbers under the one name.
