Default Device Upgrade Through Handheld Configuration Tool

Please Login to Remove!

I'm currently running BES 4.1.4. I have about 100 users. However, a bunch of these users are not yet running 4.2 on their 8700's. The main goal with the handheld upgrade is the ability to listen to .wav files so that unified messaging will finally work properly for everyone. I found this article:

Install BlackBerry device software using the BlackBerry Handheld Configuration Tool

However, it doesn't point me to about half of the stuff that I need to perform this task. Generally, I need a .alx file an stuff as far as I know.

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

I assume that I can pretty much follow the DST 2007 patch process but I need the handheld software files before I am able to do this.

Saying that you intend on following the DST2007 patch instructions leads one to believe that you are trying to do this wirelessly, OTA.

You can't upgrade the device handheld OS wirelessly, OTA.
Device OS upgrades can only be done via USB cable at this time.

Ah, yeah I was hoping that there might have been some documentation that I couldn't find. Thanks for the answer. I guess I can stop looking for that OTA solution now, then.

I believe this is the requirements for OTA OS updates ... unless RIM changes their mind again.

BES 4.1 SP4
HH OS 4.3

So, before we can do OT OS upgrades we have to have our handhelds up to 4.3?

It was included with OS 4.3.0, but I'm very curious as to their plans for that OS family (tentative plans show it's going to be ready for the launch of the 8120), as OS 4.3.1 is now in beta for most of the devices (including the Pearl).

Upgrade.alx (header):
Code:
<application id="net.rim.blackberry.otaupgrade">
        <name>Wireless Upgrade</name>
<description>Provides the ability to upgrade device software over the air.</description>
        <version>%_appsVersion:V03%</version>
        <vendor>Research In Motion</vendor>
        <copyright>Copyright 2007 Research In Motion</copyright>
Module Filename: net_rim_bb_otaupgrade.cod

Going by what we already know, it will be transparent to the user for the download. From what I'm seeing here with this device, it will utilize icons for the notification of it's progress (otaicon-download.png, otaicon-new.png, otaicon-ready.png, otaicon-stopped.png). It looks like the files/modules are gzip compressed during the transfer (maybe). Anyhow, that's about all I can dig. Maybe it's already out there - haven't really read up on it too much.

those instructions look like how to perform a upgrade while the device(s) are plugged into the BES. basically you can plug as many handhelds as you want into the BES and perform this step adn all will be upgraded simultaneously.
