Default Testing GC loss

Last week we had an incident where one of our DC's was rebooted without our knowledge and so we had issues with the BES until it was rebooted. I found a registry hack that supposedly forces the BES to look for another DC. I applied the fix to one of our servers, and then created a host entry to point to the DC to which the BES is currently attached. I then changed that host file to an invalid IP. If I ping that DC from the server, there is no reply; however, I can still send/receive from my device and I see no events stating that the DC was lost.

Does the BES use something else to resolve DNS?

Thanks! I had read this thread previously as that is how I found the reghack for Exchange 2007. I applied the hack on Friday and restarted the services. This morning, I wanted to test so I created that incorrect host file entry. I cant ping the DC now...which is what I wanted...but I guess the BES is still seeing it because I was still able to send/receive and I didnt see any issues.

Do I need to drop the NIC or something?
