Default Problems installing MSDict dictionaries

Please Login to Remove!

I've got a few MSDict dictionaries from MobiSystems.com. For some reason they use complex EXE installers instead of zipped ALX/COD files. Some dictionaries install like a breeze, and some won't install at all, Loader.exe (invoked by MSDict installer) just won't see them.

Rebooting PC, soft BB reset, battery pulls, downgrading Device OS, nothing seems to help. Usual trick of stopping the installation half way and looking for ALX/COD in some temp folder doesn't work with some dictionaries, as those temp folders are full of DLLs, EXEs, INIs and god knows what else.

Does anyone know any workaround for this. Thanks.

I used OTA to install most dictionaries. It was time-consuming. It does work though. It first downloads a limited-size dictionary and asks if you want the complete thing on the device.

While I just did it again last week (I upgraded to a Tour and was able to transfer the license), I really don't recall my method. Ah, just checked my email - I had links to a JAD file for OTA.

I recall that nonsense EXE application and also had problems with it.

I have found a workaround to install from the PC, works like a charm, at least on my Windows XP-SP3. EXE installers that give problems are only those that contain a single dictionary, plus MSDict Viewer (all installers include the Viewer module). On Mobile Systems website you need to find and download a dictionary bundle that includes the dictionary which you need, and not a single dictionary. So if you need:

"MSDict Concise Oxford English Dictionary"

download the installer for:

"MSDict Concise Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus"

EXE installers for bundles are different that those for single dictionaries, and they always store files in the temp folder, by default in:

C:\Program Files\MobileSystems\MSDict

In my case I didn't even need to touch those ALX/COD/PDB files in the temp folder, because those installers downloaded everything perfectly straight to my BB. The properly working installer looks like this:

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1882/10182009181952.png

Now just select component(s) that you need.

The defective installers, used with single dictionaries, won't have the windows shown on the first two screen shots.

You don't need to buy an actual bundle, you can make a payment from a page with a single dictionary, activation key will work just fine.
