CDMA's biggest depresser is the dirty license fee each carrier and manufacturer has to pay Qualcomm, not mentioning its capacity constrain. 2 carriers in the States are CDMA-based, while the rest are or going to be GSM/UMTS platform. Nextel is one of the few TDMA left-over -- where is the economy of scale for the manufacturers?

UMTS is constrained by EXPENSIVE license fee; hence, the carriers are put choken; that's why there came the 1X, EVDO, EVDV, 2X, ... --- if UMTS performs as planned, you won't have these workarounds.

WiMAX is something we all need to pay attention. Looks like this is merely a wireless service; not really, what do you think the recent take off of Skype (Voice over IP). If you are always "on line", why can't someone create a handset to incorporate that VOIP function to let you talk to the whole world at merely $24.99/month? Want to see some trace of evidence? Talked to a Sprint rep at a trade show here in Vegas yesterday about a Nextel 8700, and he told me to look for for a Nextel 8700 in the last quarter of 2006. I asked him if it was going to be using IDEN or CDMA and he said it would be a hybrid that links the two.

There are no iDEN/CDMA BB plans. An 8700 will be on CDMA.

Can't comment on what jdvegas heard. I do know my RIM CSM told our dealership at training that no new iDEN BB were on the near horizon only a CDMA 7100 series - next month or so - and the 8700 - hopefully before year's end but probably Q1 next year.

I like my 7520 and i would probably get the 8700. Either way, Nextel is the best carrier around.

Also, please remember that Nextel no longer exists. The company is Sprint Nextel, with Sprint being used as the marketing name.

Then why are there store that sell nextel only still? It doesn't matter, I'm not ever gonna call them sprint, or sprint nextel, I'm a nextel customer, its as simple as that. And by the way nextel still exists, at least as far as a customer service standpoint...nextel and sprint customer service have nothing to do with each other. You still can't go from sprint to nextel or vice versa without paying the early termination fees on either end

I know that sprint has announced a dual mode cdma/iden device slated for October, but the rumor is that it is not a BB device. This does still give us some sort of hope for a dual mode 8700 device, but i don't know that i am gonna hold my breath on it. I love my nextel 7520, and would love to go with an 8700 but i don't think i would want to give up my nextel service for one. Of course, an 8700 CDMA edge network phone with IDEN DC would be awesome

CDMA doesn't have EDGE - EVDO. If you think iDEN Blackberry units are BIG now just think how big an iDEN/CDMA device would be.....

i dont care how big the 7520 i love how sturdy it feels in my hand. the 7520 is a MACHINE and its takes a beating like you wouldnt believe!

My ideal device would be a Sprint CDMA 8700 (in black, not in Cingular's ugly gray/silver), with EDGE and/or GPRS backup (for international, not domestic, roaming).

Is that too much to ask? I think that if Sprint came out with such a device, it would finally have an attractive option for professionals who need a Blackberry, but who also need the ability to use it internationally. Right now that potentially lucrative market is cornered by Cingular and T-Mobile, and I can't imagine that Sprint and VZW wouldn't want a piece of it.
