Default SIP client beta for Blackberry

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I will release a SIP client beta 1 for the Blackberry in a few weeks.

Points.
1) It only works on GSM phones
2) It only supports G.711 codec
3) Eventhough it works on OTA and WIFI, it would be locked for WIFI only
4) STUN server address is hard coded in
5) DTMF relay has not been implemented
6) The outbound proxy is the same as the registration server
7) It will have an expiration date of 7/31/10 (could be changed)

Notes: We have tested this on no less than half a dozen commercial servers and all of them checked out.

SIP was originally intended to create a mechanism for inviting people to large-scale multipoint conferences on the Internet Multicast Backbone. I would suspect that even though the protocol may work with the Cell service, once the carriers find out VOIP multipoint conference calls can be made bypassing call plans you will see some form of blocking or at a minimum a charge for this service protocol use. Keep in mind although the SIP may be available now for some Cell phones including the Iphone, if the App really takes off the carriers won't ignore it as they do now. The real killer is the carriers are struggling with bandwidth demand and this will really cause a jump.

It only works on later models of BBs built for GSM network. Check the spec of the phone. We've tested on 8520, 8900 wifi, 9000, 9700. Don't know about the 8820 as it has a much slower processor then the phone I mentioned above.

@tsac. Im sure some carriers may try to lock it down but I doubt it. SIP is already a major app on Nexus, android and even Iphone has several apps for that Its the next essential App. In my opinion it was essential 5 years ago.... why is the world so slow?

I dont know if you looked at sip traffic but the bandwidth used is minimal. Ive watched it on my lan and a sip call is really lite. a few KB's I think the statistic I saw was that 5 sip calls would use the same bandwidth that is currently required for a standard call currently supported on CDMA or GSM.

I would like to participate in the beta test. I run a hosted asterisk based service for businesses, and currently have about 450 phones connected to my servers.

The 8820 and the 8520 aren't even remotely similar.
They were released about 5 years apart.

I also would like to participate in the beta test. Have asterisk server as well as epygi PBX. Would prefer G729, but alaw would be fine too.

I would also like to test this sip client out.

My company is a reseller for a phone system that has a sip server built-in, but finding a client for Blackberry is well... impossible.

Either way, I'm excited to try this out. It's functionality that our clients would love.

Hi,

I'd also very much like to take part in the beta -- I have a Bold 9700 and run Asterisk 1.4 with multiple inbound and outbound SIP trunks.

Thanks,

-Mike

Anytime now. Just the working on the last minute touch up.

Again. GSM phones only. Talking to people in China to use a special made bluetooth headset to go around the limitations of CDMA phones.
