Default Bold 9700 as Wi-Fi Router

Please Login to Remove!

Hello

I would like to connect my Ubuntu 8.04 laptop to a new BB Bold 9700 in order to access the Internet.

Instead of using the BB as a modem and tethering it with a cable or bluetooth, I would like to use the BB's Wi-Fi connection and connect via my laptop's Wi-Fi adapter.

i.e., I want to use the BB as a Wi-Fi router.

Is this possible?

(I have an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile Germany.)

Alternatively, has any one tethered this BB with Ubuntu 8.04 using "barry" or similar application (ideally with usb cable).

Thanks

Richard

I wouldn't say overtly its not possible.
There may be a 3rd party software similar to JoikuSpot Light/Premium that S60 devices have available, for the BlackBerry. You'll have to G/Bing it to find the software or search under utilities in AppWorld.

Ha Ha, Yeah Right! There is NO way they would do something like this. Unless, there is a way for the major carriers to charge for up/down data transfer. Maybe there is someone willing to devote time to an open source solution? I don't even know if it is legal.

this would basically be tethering. and we all know that goes on every day all day long. so why is it so far fetched? and how would it be illegal? this DOES exist on other phones you know...

Tmob charges for tethering after a certain amount of data flow. If you are using tethering so much that you have multiple devices using it I think you would be probably be the type that would be exceeding the limit (but maybe not). I don't think it is illegal to tether all kinds of devices (via phone router), but if you are trying to get around the quotas that might be. I guess what I am saying is I wasn't being very clear in my previous post.

While it's not exactly what you are looking for, I did find a way to add a small pocket sized external router to my 9700. PHS300 Personal WiFi Hotspot - 3G/4G | Cradlepoint Technology I simply plug my USB cable into both the 9700 & the router and it becomes a wifi hotspot by tethering the router to the 9700. Not a cheep solution. And requires an extra device. But it definitely works. I have it running on AT&T just like I do for Blue Tooth tethering. But this way all my devices that need wifi to connect can share my 9700 3G connection. This is something I would use when there is no other option in some countries around the world where they want way too much for wifi. My BB international data plan makes this very efficient for that kind of occasional use.

Why go to all of the trouble to use a Blackberry connected VIA USB to access a wifi connection?

Spend $20-$30 on a USB or PCI wireless adapter that's compatible with Ubuntu.

It's a simple solution and most likely better preforming.

dude, your TOTALLY missing the point. we are not talking about accessing a wifi network. we want to use the blackberry to access the cellular 3G network. the link between the laptop and and the blackberry would be wifi (in theory) its a simple tethering scenario

In order for this to happen from the device side, it requires and Ad-Hoc connection which doesn't align with RIM's security strategy. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon for "RIM" to allow this

I currently have a Windows Mobile device and use WMWifiRouter which works GREAT, but will miss it if I move back to a Blackberry.

the new sprint evo 4G has this feature too, right out of the box with 4G data speeds, it is getting very tempting to leave BB again.

Dbltap - how did you get that to work? I just got my PHS300 and can't get it to work with my AT&T 9700. When I got on the phone with Cradlepoint support, they claimed they never got it to work with the 9700. I'd really like to get it to work... what were settings? Thx!
