Default Verizon unlocked the GPS on 8830..so?

Please Login to Remove!

What does that mean? How can I finally use GPS on my phone? Do I have to sign up and pay for it somewhere?

That means you can use GPS with BlackBerry Maps and possibly some other map/gps applications without having to pay more, or without having to pay for VZ Navigator.

To enable GPS, to to Options > Advanced Options > GPS > GPS Data Source should be Device GPS, GPS Services should be Location On.

No. BlackBerryMaps works, that is all, unless you subscribe to VZNavigator.

So you are saying that once I enter a destination on BB maps, the icon on the phone will travel along with the car? I believe it just gave me a map, not a GPS.

You should read the Help in BBMaps. It explains all the functions.

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

Anyone anticipate any other Apps open up besides BB Maps?

the bb maps "gps" function is simply to find where you are and get directions from there.. it does follow along where your driving if you view it in map mode, but it does not give turn by turn directions.

Did you mean the 8330 from Verizon or the 8830?

The OP stated the 8830.

Both if running OS 4.5 will now run BBMaps.

has anyone actually tried installing say, garmin mobile on the 8330? if you visit garmin's website they list all of the bb that are compatible with their software. the curve, the storm, etc. all they say is that "some providers may block usage of it." If its an app, how could verizon block it? i mean, if you install it and it works with gps, how could it not work? or am i missing how it works altogether?

The app isn't blocked by Verizon. Access to the GPS receiver is blocked. There are countless threads on this that go into further detail if you're interested.

BBmaps is just one of many GPS apps. If you need functionality beyond what if offers you need to select a different app. If you're with Verizon you can try VZ Navigator if you want to use the internal GPS receiver. If you're ok with using a BT GPS receiver you can do that and avoid having to pay for VA Navigator.

See the GPS subforum for additional info.

But how is it blocked? Is Verizon modifying the OS? Are they monitoring what apps are launched, and then blocking the request to access the GPS?

I don't think they are modifying the OS, because I believe some people have loaded OSes on their Verizon phones that are not Verizon approved and they still can't access the GPS with other apps.

It isn't hardware blocked because they just opened up the GPS for BB Maps and it is the same device.
