you'll always take a short outage to improve long term reliability. I have a feeling that with the popularity of blackberrys growing exponentially, RIM is making sure they keep up. Good move.

i don't remember them ever doing any scheduled work during the day
NO, not another update. and it couldn't have come at a worst time, 3:00am-7:00am AST, what am I to do for 20 minutes during the outage.
Oh wait, never mind, I'll be sleeping during that time. YES a time when I won't have to work during an update on the RIM rely, so it's not all that bad.
This doesn't even affect me, because I'm in the UK, but when they say messages, they mean emails, right? I presume SMS messages go straight through the mobile provider... I never really understand which data goes through BIS and which goes through WAP (or regular internet?!) channels.
Email and PIN messages go through RIM while SMSs don't. So when there's a RIM outage like this, calls and SMS remain unaffected. Services that use your carrier's APN also aren't affected.

Anyone know if this impacted the ability to connect to the internet? I'm travelling (on the East coast at present) and up until today I've had no problem with connectivity. This morning it took forever to boot from GSM to edge to EDGE. While I'm getting email (albeit delayed) I'm still unable to connect to the internet.
