Yes, when I did the upgrade in the store they quoted me:
$299-$50mir=$249 for 2 year extension
$349-$50mir=$299 for 1 year extension
I got pretty much the same story last year ($50 more discount for 2 years vs. 1 year extension) and had gone with the 1 year extension then so the first year is worth $150 and the added year is only worth $50 more - plus...
He couldn't tell me (without looking up an account that was still under contract) but he guessed it would have been $399 or more if I hadn't completed my 1 year extension from last year. That seems to jive with what people are reporting on here.
So, if I had gone with the 2 year extension last year I would have saved $50, but I would have paid $399 or so for the new phone this year. With the 1 year extension I got a $299 price for the new phone, saving $100 this year vs. $50 last year. When I add it up like that, it doesn't seem as ridiculous - save $50 now or $100 later and have a year's interest on the $50. It's basically a gamble as to whether or not something better is out there in about a year, but that seems to be the case in general so I do the 1 year extensions. There will most definitely be something better out there before 22 months are up...
(And, as always, YMMV with mail-in rebates - personally I hate them, which is why I like to use CC and whine until they comp me the rebate - you can't do that in a retail store...
