Does BES for Exchange require lots of Disk I/O?

I am coming from a Domino environment, where the BES ran on a Domino server with associated database partition containing all user state databases, and transaction log drives. There was pretty heavy disk i/o due to hitting all the state databases constantly.
Now I am working with Exchange and it doesn't seem like it requires a whole lot of disk i/o since the state information is stored in the mailboxes. Am I correct in this assumption? Can I just set up a RAID1 C:\ partition on a new BES server and be done with it?
