Default Unlocked T-mobile phones - What carrier(s) could we switch to?

Please Login to Remove!

I LOVE T-mobiles prices. Far better plans than anywhere else. We have been with T-Mobile since before Voicestream even! But the coverage is non-existant at our home and nothing has changed with 2 years of "service" issue reports, SO... we are looking at changing. I have a brand new 8900 that I LOVE, and my wife has an 8320 that she really likes (both unlocked). I know they would work with AT&T, but what other carriers can we consider? T-Mo, AT&T, and Verizon are pretty much the only 3 for me. I am not interested in Sprint/Nextel. Verizon has the best service IN our house and yard, but would these work or would we have to get new Verizon models? (Tour looks nice). Thanks in advance!

1. Your 8900 and 8320 won work on Verizon for two reasons.

2. I was with Tmobile from before VoiceStream also... Can you say PowerTel?

3. There's no beer in the poll. Fail.

JSanders alluded to this earlier, but for the sake of completeness, Tmobile phones are GSM. Verizon is CDMA. So you would need to get new devices if you switched over to Verizon. AT&T is GSM, so you could use your Tmobile devices.

Why don't you just enable the UMA function on both of these Berries? Then, you will have all the coverage you need in your house.

</sarcasm>Thanks for the tip</sarcasm> heh

If I walk out in my yard, I have no service. When I drive away from my house I have no service. 1/4 from my house it connects, then another mile down the road my calls drop again. It is not my equipment, it is my service provider. I am switching to a different carrier - AT&T and Verizon both work in all these deadspots (I have changed equipment several times in the last 4 years, and every phone gets the same service in the same areas. Plus my parents and my sister have AT&T, my wife's parents and both her brothers have Verizon - all tested in these dead zones).

I have chosen to stay with TMo for the low data plan. If I'm that close to my house, my peeps should be calling the land line!! (I guess I could have an emergency while I'm 'that' close to home, but how often does that happen?)

So there are 2 new 9630 Tours in a UPS box on their way to me. Now we will see how the new devices and new carrier play out!

Good luck to you on that.

As others have said, AT&T would be your best bet if you want to stay with GSM.

I have similiar problems right now with TMo, but have chosen to stick it out for the rate plan cost (as someone said above). I will chime that TMo has the best cost data plans around I think. Go for the unlimited and if you are not on it already, the Royalty plan for being a solid customer since PowerTel. Damn I saw that and thought way way back!!!! ;)

Porting isnt quite finishished yet, but outgoing calls work great (incoming are still going to the Tmo BBs)

With Tmo we had:
2-3 bars near our neighborhood
1-2 bars IN our neighborhood
0-1 bars IN our yard
0 bars IN our house

Now with Vzw we have:
full bars near our neighborhood
full bars IN our neighborhood
full bars IN our yard
and full bars IN our house!

Well worth the extra $30 a month over what I was paying.

A poll such as this is petty useless IMHO. It only matters for you and where you use the device, not where we use ours.

You find out which carrier provides the best coverage when and where you need it - where you live, work, travel and play. And I think you might have already started to answer the question since you said Verizon works best at your house.

Cost and/or the device really make no difference if you don't have the coverage you need.
