Default Signal strength issues (3G)

Please Login to Remove!

ok, so I received my Storm today - I did the update to the latest version Vodafone is offering (using it on Orange Switzerland). The interface is half-way fast now (nowhere as fast as the bold, though) and screen rotation works well.

However, I've been experiencing signal strength issues. In my office at work, the Bold indicates 5 bars for signal strength on the Orange 3G network. The Storm shows one. At home it's the same thing. Then, sometimes it'll go up to three or even 5 bars when I let it sit on the table. As soon as I pick it up, it'll go down to 1 again. Interestingly, this is the exact same behavior the iPhone 3G was displaying before Apple released a firmware upgrade.

Is anyone else seeing this? Is mine broken?

peter

I get the same exact thing here in the U.S. I never get the full 5 bars to last. It is very typical that I only have 2 to 3 at most times. I thought this was strange. Anybody else experiencing this?

I am experiencing this also. I get much lower signal strength in areas where I was getting full signal with my 8830. Not sure how to fix this.

Whenever I have complained to VZ about signal issues, they tell me to use call *228, opt 2, which updates "roaming capabilities". Personally, I don't believe this has ever helped me. But might be worth a try if you haven't done so already.

I receive one to three bars at home in my home office (which is on the lower level of a split-entry). I also receive equally unimpressive signal strength in other locations that are "below grade". NO PHONE operates well under those conditions -- nor does Wi-Fi.

I have dropped three calls over the last week when calling from my home office. I have no similar difficulties when out and about, however.

Add another one to the list. Same exact behavior as above. Never see full signal for more than a few seconds. Usually at 2-3 and in the elevator at my apartment I lost signal completely while my Sprint 8330 still had a decent signal. The signal strength jumps from 2 to 4 back to 2 in a matter of seconds, while the phone sits on my desk without me moving it.

It's somewhat confusing, though, because side by side on the status screens, sitting in front of me on my desk, the Storm shows -87dBm while the Curve set to roam only on Verizon shows -88dBm. If I move them a few feet to the right, though, I see -81 on the Curve and -89 on the Storm.

I think the Storm's reception is definitely sub-par. What a shame, I like the phone otherwise, I'm not sure if I'll keep it though.

I used to work with verizon as a techician. The *228, opt 2 thing does not do anything. All it does, is update the cell phone tower list stored in the phone so Verizon wont get charged extra money if you connect to another carriers tower. It does nothing for you.

agreed, subpar reception, this is uncanny seeing as how they boast the best network...
it seems as if I can't MOVE around while on a call for fear of losing service and dropping the call EVN IF I HAVE "FULL SIGNAL".

and yes, *228 is bullsh*t
Verizon sucks...

yeah - I noticed that too - last night, it kept on dropping data calls and displayed "SOS" although I do have decent GPRS reception at home :-/

Same here.

With T-mobile I could drive from San Diego to Los Angeles and not have one dropped call on my 8830. With my Storm on Verizon I had 4 dropped calls on the same route from SD to LA. And to think I switched because Verizon's service coverage.
