So Cingular does not offer insurance for the BB handhelds.

I am a convert from T-Moble and had my 7100t and 7230 insured. It was worth the extra $5-6 bucks/month to me.

Before I jumped into the Blackberry world, I had a Kyocera 7135 through AllTel and they did not offer insurance, so I took out a rider on my home owners insurance for it and the accessories. I think it cost me $100 bucks, but I don't recall the parameters -- like the deductible and such.

Is anyone aware of a 3rd party company that will insure my 8700c?

Has anyone put their device on their home owners policy and if so, what did it cost and what were the parameters?

I've had my BBs on my homeowners rider. It costs virtually nothing if you already have the rider, but you should call the device a handheld computer instead of a phone when you talk to your broker. They won't insure phones. The real issue, however, is whether you'd ever want to make a claim on your policy for such a small amount given the resulting risk of an increase in your premium or, if you've had enough other claims on your policy, cancellation of your policy. Not worth it to me.

My old samsung sprint PDA phone was insured by lock/line which handles the cingular phones too. I guess they just don't have the inventory of BBs available to replace them. That's a pity. I would have thought twice about paying that much for a phone if i knew i couldn't insure it for $4 a month...

Cingular doesn't insure any of the high-end phones or BB devices. I assume because they fear people would intentionally "brake it" or have it "stolen" just to get the latest and greatest device on the market. In fact the list is so long, I assume the only thing they actually insure is the free phones?

Btw, the exclusion list doesn't include the 8700c, but I am sure they wouldn't allow it if you called and tried to add it per the note at the bottom.

I called Cingular last night and I was able to insure my 8700C for 3.99 a month. The rep said that I have a 50 dollar deductible and I can claim upto 2 phones in one year. Just to make sure he added this to my account, I signed on to my account on line and there it was. He did add the feauture into my account. Also another friend of mine who has the 8700 has insurance o her phone. She got it when she upgraded her contract.

WARNING: I doubt that they will honor it if you have a problem.

While that might be true and is very possible in this case. If the customers are paying insurance for their BB then they have an obligation to them. Its not the customers fault but thiers. Simply telling them "Although you've been paying insurance we cannot process your insurance request." doesn't cut it for me.

I don't disagree with your thinking, but do a search on the forum here and I think you will find a person who THOUGHT they had insurance, only to find that they did not.

They got a refund on the $5/month they were paying, but no insurance.

Yeah, its a shame Cingular doesn't spend enough time giving their customer service enough training and or informatino. Though I could be wrong. I don't even want to start on the 1 1/2 hours it took to get my 8700c at a Cingular store. But I did get a free MP3 player for my patience.

He should have taken them to Small Claims Court. He would have received his coverage. The vendor can't collect fees and later claim it was a mistake. The minute the vendor accepted fees a contract was formed. The vendor is the master of his contract so he can't claim he didn't know what he was doing.

But I figure there is a chance it will just fall out of the holster when I am riding in the next few years. She didn't even ask what type of "phone" I had but took a few minutes to get it added and I can see it online already.

I just called, though I was not able to get my 8700c insured I did however get a $129 credit on my last months bill!! Wow... thats service.

And if is does work, do you really want to go through the hassle of Small Claims Court just to get a new BB ? Within a year I'm sure the price will be down another $50-$100 when the competition is able to release it. And by then Amazon will have those great Cash Back cell deals and there will be loads of BB8700c on eBay !

Warning - make sure this charge actually appears on your bill. I thought I had purchased similar insurance for my 7780. Then, when I lost it, I figured, no biggie...that's what I've been paying insurance for. But when I went to make the claim, I was surprised to hear that I had no such insurance. And when I went to review my bills, I was surprised that this charge was NOT appearing on each bill. I know I had the conversation with the rep, but obviously they were not able to actually add it to my bill, but nobody ever told me, and I didn't pay close attention. Ended up buying a 7290, making the 8700C my 3rd Blackberry this year!!

I will verify it, but I assume since I see it online in my plan with the correct $ amount, I assume it will make it to the bill too. My bill comes out in a day or 2, so I should see it and any other changes related to the switch from the 7290 to 8700 plus IM time, if there is any. Should be an interesting bill to say the least ;)

Thanks Ron. THIS is what I have been looking for. A 3rd party company that can do this.

Anyone used them? Looking for someone to vouch for the company. The price is right.

Absolutely correct. Acceptance by agent is acceptance by Cingular and binding.
