Why not just call Verizon and get the unlock code for free? Am I missing something?

Yep, There are many more Storms than just Verizon. Vodafone has now had two countries launch and not everyone will be able to get them through Verizon.

I'm a VIP business customer and Verizon CS and Blackberry Global Support both told me negative on the unlock code...curious to hear from those that have been successful how they went about getting the unlock code from them? Or is it just luck of the draw? I remember getting the unlock code for my 8830 without a problem, but it was some time after release and not right away.

I am technically challenged so please guide me through the following:
My bf loves blackberries but he lives in the middle east. I'm in IL and I'm switching from tmobile to verizon to get the 9530 (ordered it online already) but I'd like to get another one for my bf's birthday and mail it to him. I'm not sure if he would be able to use it with a sim card from over there, would he? Can I unlock it for him or buy it unlocked? Should I buy a 9530 or a 9500? What do u guys suggest??

Does not really matter which model you get really as long as he has a SIM card to install it will work ! On the website link ( deblocage-blackberry ) they charge $ 59.99 to unlock your Blackberry Storm ! They will be sending the unlock codes on December 3rd ! I have the Storm 9530 and Im waiting for my code from them ! I bought my unlock code from them for my G1 also. The codes they sell work ! You can also buy it unlocked ( mobilecityonline ) the 9500 for $ 699.00 !

No difference between the two even if the 9530 is CDMA? (I'm writing it but have no clue what it means lol)
And I know my bf has a GSM sim card. Does that mean he will have ALL of the features on his unlocked storm or is he going to face problems?

The 9530 is Verizon model that works with there network called CDMA ! Also the 9530 accepts a SIM card. The 9500 is Vodafone model that only accepts SIM card. If you dont want to loose features you should go with the 9500 due to Verizon model might have features that are only exclusive to there network !

Either one will work fine. Verzion did not lock the 9530 down.

He means they didn't lock down the system to only work on CDMA when it's available. You still need to unlock the device to use another carriers SIM.

Thank you, yes! You will need to still get the SIM lock removed. I mean they didn't block the Quad band GSM, GPS, Etc. Sorry for any confusion.
