Exclamation BB phone cannot be used for call without BB service activated?

Please Login to Remove!

My sister has a BB phone, but she hasn't activated BB service. Not sure if she wants to, either. I think she just likes the QWERTY keyboard to text her friends compared to using conventional cellphones.

The weird thing is that she's able to text but can't use the BB device to make calls to anyone. CMIIW, but shouldn't carrier network be affected by whether or not BB service is activated? I mean, BB service is nothing more than data service, has nothing to do with voice service. And the fact that she's able to send text messages baffles us more. Clearly the carrier network is working. Is the phone itself the problem?

Can anyone explain this? Thanks.

Has she tried the browser to see if she has some data capability? Some carriers will provide a limited internet/data/texting for free. T-Mobile has their own T-zones (I think it goes by a different name now) that is a free service. I would contact the carrier and find out what she is using.

If it was a used BlackBerry, there is a possibility that it has an IT Policy on it that disables calling.

Okay, that makes sense, I'll ask her about it. Don't think it's a problem with the carrier coz the SIM card works fine with another regular cellphone. Thanks.

Check for an IT Policy:

Options > Security Options > General Settings:

At the bottom of that screen is should have a section for Services.
What you should see is ***no services***
Anything else, like "default", is an IT Policy

Does the fact that Options-Security Options-General Settings say ***No Services*** under Services guarantee that there is no IT Policy?

My Curve 8330 purchased new on Ebay has ***No Services*** yet under Firewall it is frozen on enabled and I am not able to disable it. When I try to download certain 3rd party apps such as games, I get denied due to "IT Policy."

I plan on following the FAQ "Remove IT Policy" via the JL_Cmdr but I came across this thread and wondered why, if I do indeed have a lingering low level IT policy, my Services doesn't say default.

Probably. In particular you don't want there to be a line like:
Code:
IT Policy Name: Default
BTW it isn't the best to post a new question on an old thread, the people you want to read it may not because the thread is old and played out, and when you get people trying to solve two different problems on one thread it gets confusing.
