Default Advice needed on GPS Receiver

Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys,

Basically we're doing a project to send a weather balloon 24km into the atmosphere, we're hopefully using a Blackberry 8700v (on o2 blackberry paygo plan).

We're using it as a cheap option to track the device and so need a cheap, lightweight GPS receiver that will last at least 5 hours without charge.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Many Thanks

You are looking to use a GPS connected to the 8700 to send location data since the 8700 does not have GPS? Is that correct?

Yes that's correct, the cheaper the better really. I don't generally use a Blackberry so I'm new to this area and looking for something that will be quite reliable.

Another option would be to buy a second hand Blackberry with GPS built in but I can't really see that being under £30?

You are going to need a way to transmit the data. IMHO, that will be the tough part. BB's don't typically do that. They generally use a map application to display the current position on the screen and it takes a BB data plan for the maps.

I've been thinking about it..... Maybe the OP has an app, or plans on writing one (or having it written), and it will simply record for retrieval later when the device is retrieved. At any rate, the GPS pucks were down to $40-50 new several years ago for some models. Don't know what they are now or what's available. If the 8700 is in a holster and simply recording, it will make it that long if fully charged and battery is good. It could be a stretch for the bluetooth puck, though, depending on the model. The one I was using back then would go 6+ hours as I recall.

I'm using Instamapper for that, it sends GPS positions every 5 seconds and its mapped live, very useful little app and it's free, so I'm just looking for a GPS receiver now and then can test it thoroughly before launch.

Take a look at the app, works on most GPS phones - InstaMapper.com

Here's what came up at crackberry -> Globalsat BT-368i Bluetooth GPS Receiver | BlackBerry GPS Receivers | ShopCrackBerry 10hr battery life.

Globalsat is the brand I had. Thought they would have come down in price by now, especially with internal gps so common now.

Here's less expensive at amzon.com -> Amazon.com: bluetooth gps puck
