I currenly have an 8700 BB fron cingular, I unlocked it and used it with T-mobile
yesterday, when I was stuck all by myself in a hotel in Paris with no internet access, I got my 8700 out and connected it to the PC, configured it as a modem, and of we go, roaming on Orange network I was getting 921kbps.
very sweet.
I know it will cost money, $20 per Mb, but sure beats the heck out of paying 16 Euro for 30 minutes dial up access at the hotel

I've been trying to get mine to work as a modem and I'm struggling with getting it to work right.
What did you do to get yours working? I can't help but think I stuffed something up in the process.

there always is the museums, the landmarks, the food, the friendly women down by canal street..there is lots to do in Paris besides web surfing

there are free ways to get the 8700c to work as a modem but after trying them to no avail i gave up and bought mobishark modem ... a software app that after following very simple instructions i got internet access on my laptop .... very nice ! free trial version gives u an idea but i just bought it outright and its awesome ... you can get it at : www.mobishark.com

So does this work so well that you could use it as permenant internet connection for your PC? With no added data charges when you have the unlimited plan (T-Mobile)? If so, that would be amazing.

i agree , that would be amzing . oh , i have cingular , i can't speak for t-mobile or there charges . plus , i haven't got my first bill since hooking up my BB as a modem for my laptop . but to use as a modem and have that be your only internet connection ... hhhmmmmm , nope . i wouldn't recommend because its DIRT slow !!!! only as a cool way to do something quick and log off its useful . like when i go to the hospital to stay with my mom ... i stay for many hours on end and after a while we start those awkward moments of silence ...well then i woop out the old laptop and amaze her with news clips , events , and many current things going on in the outsde world ... also show her emails from family asking for her and that makes the BB as a modem very good for me .... but if it was my " only " internet connection i would hang myself ..... lol .... j/k ....

So what kind of actual transfer rates are you getting? 30-60kbps?

No charges for tethering with T-Mobile. Don't know why Cingular charges an adidtional $30/month for tethering.

yeah , whats up with that ? i mean , if i tether with mobi shark modem... how can they know i'm tethering ? and why would they charge me extra ? i did pay 45.00 bucks a month for " unlimited BB data " ....whats up ?
