Having MAPI issues

Have been trying to work this out with RIM, but with no luck so far (and unfortunately I think I trusted a TSupport rep when I shouldn't have.)
We started getting reports that calendar syncs were not going from device to server (works fine when entered from Outlook.) We're in a mixed environment of Exchange 2003 and 2007, so the BES server had CDO 1.2.1. I still don't know why things stopped working. What ended up happening was after I gave a RIM tech the mapi32.dll version, 1.0.2536.0, he said that was wrong, should be a 6.5 file. He told me to replace it, which I know now was bad advice.
The next tech had me rename all the cdo and mapi32 files, uninstall CDO 1.2.1 and reinstall. He then had me create a new mapi profile for besadmin. We got the error, the name could not be resolved. Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer.
I can ping the PO server the account is on, response <1ms. They had me configure a new service account, same issue.
I saw a Microsoft article that mentioned this error and missing Rpc_Svr_Binding_Order and Rpc_Binding_Order keys. I checked the server and they were not there (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exchange Provider.)
Would these missing keys be the issue or something else? If I login to a Citrix server, I can setup a mail account and resolve the name there.
