Default Company vs User Owned Devices

Hello All,

This is my first post and glad to have stumbled on this site. Looks like a lot of good information.

My company has asked me to start looking into deploying Blackberry's for our company. Only looking at 5 to start. One of the issues that has come up is that people want to purchase their own BB and then hook it up to my environment. I've made it very clear that I don't like it for a number of reasons (can't put company software on it due to licensing, etc). I am pushing for the company to purchase these so that I can enforce corporate IT policies to these devices just like we do for pc's in the office (users don't install software, porn, etc)

Any feedback, tips, or documentation would be very helpful.

Welcome to the forums!

I strongly recommend you DO NOT allow personal owned devices in your environment - you are just asking for the mother of all migraines. People will complain that the IT Policy should be changed because it is on 'their' device, just for starters. They will want you to remove the password, allow downloads, blah, blah, blah.

Don't do it..... get your own company owned devices and deploy those instead.

We say "NO PERSONAL DEVICES. PERIOD." Its a friggin nightmare from a support standpoint. People would be calling to complain to the BES Admin about a dropped call, personal e-mail not appearing, or wanting to get a game working.

If you do have support corporate devices, I would recommend a 2 things that I have seen.

1) Make the users sign a document that states that they are subject to all IT policy and security regulations that corporate users are. (ie, if you block 3rd party apps, then they cannot download 3rd party apps) Also in that document should state that when they leave, their device will be wiped (with no exceptions). They can't take company data with them for many reasons.

2) Create strict rules about what is supported. Specifically, make it clear that device problems are not your problem. If they are having carrier issues, or device provisioning problems, they need to call the carrier, and they need to troubleshoot the device. Its not reasonable for you to be responsible for support of personal devices.

I agree with NO PERSONAL DEVICES. It will make things easier for you as stated. However if the boss says users can use company devices, follow cancundan's advice. Create a policy outlining the rules and that their device will have the same policies as a company owned device.

I carry 2 BB's, but only because I wanted one with a camera and we don't allow them here (yet). And I really didn't want to be the BES Admin that carried one and have every one go "Oooohhh...when do I get one?!!?".

That's what happened when I got my 8830 the day they came out. I had to hide it for a while.

And I agree with the no personal devices on the BES. You are just asking for a headache if you allow it.

My BF carries 2 BB's, but that's because his company charges him $.20/min for personal calls and doesn't allow software installs (as it should be).

I don't allow any non company devices on my BES, but I aggree with a previous poster that if the company doesn't want to pay for the BB's then there should be strict policies in place that the user has to agree to and sign in order to get their device on the BES. Then you have to be the bad guy when they try to get you to fix their busted device.

I will be one of those wierdos soon. I am one of those that has a personal BB on our corporate BES (People at my level were not allowed to have them *ahem*), and frankly having the IT policy and all the restrictions is a pain, but I deal with it as I am happily using their BES. I will be getting a new corporate device which will be appropriately locked down and I will be returning my personal BB to a BIS setup once it is wiped. I think i am a pretty reasonable guy, so I don't think I p*ssed anyone off during my ride on the BES.

I have 5 users who own Blackberrys just for corporate e-mail and application access. I think they are crazy to pay for the monthly service for our gain. But to each his own.

I'm looking forward to WES and this session:

Individual or Corporate Owned devices xxx8211; Compliance & Cost Difficulties

Presently we are not allowing personal owned Blackberry onto the BES. Main reasons:

Would take away from available CAL
Support - what do we provide and how much support do we provide

I get into *frequent* arguements about this dynamic on iphone forums as it will be a device that definately pushes the line between casual lifestyle mobility and business mobility. How these devices connect isn't so much an issue as we can pretty much get any device to work with our environment but our data and policies around these devices usage are going to be evolving as more and more people get a mobile device. The above mention of written policy that users have to agree with security that will be layed down is a good start but it doesn't address the issues I noted that me as an admin don't want to take on managing.

I say no to personal devices totally. If it is important for the user to have a BB, my company will pay. If the company won't pay, you don't really need one (company is not stingy and DOES give them where needed).
There is no way I am getting into supporting personal devices - for a start, my IT Policy is tight (no 3rd party apps, no personal email, no fun IT'S ALL ABOUT WORK!! Mwha ha ha etc).
Would not support iPhones either for several reasons:
a) We are a domino shop, and enterprise support for iPhone only for Exchange in first release
b) I have an iPhone, and know just how easy they are to break. Considering that most BBs bounce, and my users STILL manage to break them, I reckon I'd have every iPhone returned with a big crack down the screen in a few days.
c) The cost of the iPhone in England is horrendous. I don't want to be responsible for bankrupting the company!

We reimburse personal users for up to a certain amount for work-incurred voice/data costs; as a result, we also impose the right to manage the devices per company policy on company-owned devices which include but is not limited to password policy, data protection, and remote wiping if lost. We do provide support as far as BES-related issues go (mail flow, etc.) but zero on anything that might be non-work related (other than offering to wipe and reactivate on the BES).

For company-owned devices, we've locked the devices way down (no 3rd party downloads, no frivolous SMS, etc.) just like we would any other portable data device.

So far, no complaints.
