Kill RimDeviceManager.exe??

Hi,
I am helping a friend that has a Blackberry and 2 XP Home PCs on his home LAN. He uses Outlook and shares the same outlook.pst (mail file) between both PCs. Since he installed the Blackberry software, he cannot open Outlook on the other PC. I was able to get it to open the shared Outlook.pst file by terminating the redirector and the desktop software and then killing RimDeviceManager.exe in the task manager. That process stayed alive and locked the pst file even though the other Rim was terminated.
Is this normal behavior?
That is a very cumbersome procedure. Is there an easier way?
Thanks,
Tom
