So what options do I have if I want to get mail, calendar and attachments?

My son just got a Windows Mobile phone and within a few minutes his Outlook tasks, calendar and email were synched wirelessly. Can I do anything like that?

If you want to get tasks, contacts, notes and calendar wirelessly, you must sign up for a hosted BES provider. Corporations also have have the BES.

Another solution, depending on your model BB and desktop/laptop, is to use the Bluetooth connection to sync your PIM data.

Desktop Redirector is for forwarding e-mail only. Nothing more.

What is a hosted BES provider? I know this is a Blacknerry forum, but would I be better off just getting the Treo my son has for what I want to do?

I don't know what you are trying to do. Perhaps some more information (or research) would be beneficial.

Hosted BES mean Hosted BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It will allow you to synch your calendar, contacts, address book, etc.

Wow; what a definition.

Here is a complete definition of what a Hosted BES provider is, who they are, what they offer, etc.

What I want to do is have my Blackberry update exactly as my Outlook on my pc does in real time from anywhere. So if my wife adds something to my calendar it pops onto my bb right after. I also want to be able to open attachments (Word, Excel, POWERPoint). I got this phone 7290 and my son got Treo and he can do all this stuff and he is mocking me. I wanted to try to avoid Microsoft. Can I do what he does?

Not without being connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
I suggest you return the BB and get a Treo.
