A friend of mine told me it was possible to send/receive SMS/MMS messages through the BES as opposed to sending them over the Cingular/AT&T network, which is costing me $10.00 a month.

Is this true? I find it hard to believe that AT&T would allow that....

You'd need a 3rd party app on the BES doing this for you. You can send email through the web, proxy web / apps through the BES, but by using your HH and doing an SMS or PIN, your device is talking directly with the carriers network

Maybe your friend was referring to the "BlackBerry Messenger" and how it's a front ends to sending PIN's back and forth.
