I was watching this guy on the train this morning typing on his 8830. I'm trying to glance at him and not look like I'm snooping so I didn't get a great look. But it sure looked like he was getting help from predictive text. Either that or he's the fastest typist I've ever seen! He was using only his thumbs and it didn't appear that he was hitting enough keys to get the words streaming across his screen like they were. If it wasn't such a crowded train and if people weren't in such a foul mood because of it, I'd have struck up a conversation and just asked. Didn't seem like the right time though.

No, the 8830 doesn't have predictive text.

The 8130 does, though.

He could have been using autotext.
Maybe he was clever enough to preload commonly used "big" words by abbreviating them.

I use autotex a lot.

Names I commonly use are all automatically capitalized ("bonnie" becomes "Bonnie").

It's a gas for anything with apostrophes ("wouldnt" becomes "wouldn't'), and is very effective with email formats ("d" becomes "Dear", and "s" becomes "Sincerely,").

Large gobs of narrative can be inserted with a couple of thumb strokes ("cn" become that huge mass of confidentiality legalese following your signature in an email, for example).

All kinds of different signature and address formats for your communications can be used with a couple of thumb hits ("ps" can be your personal signature with address and phone number, "rd" can be just your name, "m" can be what your girlfriend calls you, and so on).

Also, I automatically correct common thumb stroke mistakes with autotext ("thje" becomes "the"). If I havge (becomes "have") to correct a commonly used word twice, I flip it into autotext and I never have to bother with correcting that mistake again. Autotext actually expands the cramped keyboard quarters of the Berry for me.

Autotext is way sweet if you spend time conforming it to your use.

The only problem I've had is that it does not migrate with your sim card when you switch out your device, as almost all other features of the Berry do, such as address book, tasks, and so on. It's a bit=h to redo my auto text each time I upgrade. But it is worth it.

It must have been autotext. This dude was CRUIsing! I'll bet he loaded up autotext with his most common words and that was helping him. He just wasn't hitting his keys enough to make the words scroll across his screen like that. Reminded me of the electronic marquee in Time Square, only on steroids!

I am having autotext issues with my new phone. My previous 8830, changed i to I and didnt to didn't, but the replacement will not. The autotext setting is on, and I have tried changing it several times. I never did anything with the original to make it perform that way, so am I missing something or is the new phone having issues also.

You may have to manually add the settings to do this within Options > AutoText. It should do that after you change it!
