Default WiFi newbie questions

Sorry if this comes off as dense, but you know, maybe I am. I have no clue about how wifi actually works. So, if anyone cares to help out, here's a few questions:

- is wifi interchangeable with the wireless networking you see on your everyday wireless networking router? I mean, does a device connect to (e.g.) airport wifi the same way it connects to the wiresless router I set up at my office?

- I've see posts here that the Curve 8320 only supports UMA. Is that a different technology, and does that change the answer for my first question?

And here's the biggie...

- I don't get a signal for my BB at my parents cottage, and it's a real PITA while I'm there. They do, however, have Internet access (dial-up, but they leave it active for hours a day, maybe all day sometimes). Is it feasible that I could just bring a run of the mill wireless router when I visit, and run something on the PC end to share the connection and provide a wifi connection for my blackberry?

- What would I be able to achieve with just a wifi connection (no edge/gprs connection)? That is, email, voice, data, etc.
