Question Ok, so I added tethering to my account...

Please Login to Remove!

Some of you may have seen my prior post asking if I could use my BB as a modem, today I added the tethering option to my Verizon account so that I can use it while on assignment in Kentucky next week...
(I got it free for the first month, and only need it next week, so it's not even going to charge me anything!)

So what should I expect when it comes time to hook the two machines together? How does this work?

What is the extra cost with VZW to add tethering? (Yes, I know, this post does not answer your original question, sorry, USC over Ohio State any day!) I thought of adding tethering, but it's another $30 and for $60 you can get the USB connection. Let us know what you think of it, thanks.

Well, it's a little faster than dial-up, slower than DSL. As long as you don't try to do heavy graphics surfing it should work for you pretty well. I'm using it now to read the forums. Its faster than my satellite connection is tonight.

Connect your BB to the desktop with the USB cable, start the connection sfotware Verizon provided and follow the prompts. It's pretty simple.

Thank you, are you located in one of the more populated areas that VZW services? I was told that in rural areas it would only be around DSL speed but in major cities it is basicly the broadband speeds that you would normally have with your handheld.

thansk for the run down of how it'll work also!

I'm on Alltel, but I live about 5 miles away from the nearest Tower. The fastest speeds you may see are bursts up to 1mb, using EVDO. Your BB should show 1XEV. Anything thing less than that and your speeds will slow.

I see consistent speeds of between 400and 500kbs. DSL lowest tier is 756kbs. 1mbs would be the next tier up. The data will come down at about the same speed you see pages rendered in your browser on your phone.

Edit: What you should do is go home, fire up the laptop, disable your wireless connection, connect the BB and try it out. Then you will have a good idea of what you will see.

I say kill your wireless, if that's how you connect. If you use a Network Cable to connect, leave that out because your Winsock will be confused as to which network connection to use.

another nice option with the pearl is you can purchase an adapter to allow for bluetooth tethering, it doesn't seem to slow it down too much from what i've seen

FYI tethering with Verizon on the $29.99 email plan is another $30. If your on the $44.99 data plan then its another $15. Either way the total is $59.99 a month and first month is free as of right now....

I tether with bluetooth on Sprint and it seems as fast as with the USB cable. With bluetooth, I can log on the net as long as my BB is within 30 feet of my laptop. Works great. I'm doing it right now.

If you went with any of the high speed USB connections (I forget what they call it) and did not use the tethering service, that cost is in addition to the BB data plan, yes? So I could actually spend (AT&T) $30 on my unlimited data plan plus $60 for high speed access ($90)?!
