Default Network Files Shares & BES Express

Please Login to Remove!

Is it possible to access corporate domain file shares via a modern Blackberry using BES Express and Exchange 2007/2010?

I watched one of the intro to BES Express videos (I don't recall which one, but it was one of these BlackBerry Resource Center - Resources) it mentioned doing just that.

I can not find documentation on this via Bing, Google, RIM Docs, or help files.

I already use the DOCUMENTS function in OWA 2007 (which I have confirmed will be returning to OWA 2010 with SP1) and I would love to expand this to the BBerry's.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi,
yes, you can open files on network shares with BESX 5.x (of course no problem at all if such files are email attachments...)

I'm doing in this way: open browser, type in address field
file://servername/sharename/filename.ext
it might ask you to provide your domain credentials, it's up to share settings.
I'm using BB9000, OS 5.x, BES Express 5.x, Ms Exchange 2003
hope this helps,
alberto

Also, if you have OS 5 on your device, there may be a Files option on your menu, and you can use UNC format to access domain/network shares

Well that is quite interesting. I used the integrated app FILES to open the network location and I was able to browse folders and open files in an apparent READ ONLY mode.

I tried WORD TO GO 2.0 STANDARD but was not able to get it see network locations.

I found I could copy the files from the network share to my BBerry and then open and EDIT them via DOCS TO GO.

This brings up two questions:
1: is there a way to control the BBerry's access to network shares via BAS (or anything else). For example, what do I do if I only want a small subset of users to be able to access their network shares?

2: is there a way to open the files in EDIT mode without copying them to the local BBerry device first?

Thanks in advance.

You mean shares they normally have access at work? If they were all on one server (ie let's say a server that housed sensitive information), you could block that server from being accessed by the BES, the same way you would prevent any computer from accessing another (via VLANs, Windows Firewall blocks, etc...).

In other words, think of the BB user as someone logged onto the BES locally.

REGARDING MY QUESTION 1:

Yes, I mean control the shares they have access to in the office.

Most security concerned organizations would find uncontrolled remote access to internal files to be objectionable. Even Exchange 2007 allows you to easily specify which (if any)servers users can see via OWA.

I want some users to have access to some shares but most users I want to have no access to file shares via their BBerry, surely this is possible to control or at least disable.

Network Files Shares & BES Express

OK I figured it out...

Three things must be true for a bb user to access a network share through "FILES" bb app.

1- Domain User must be in the "Allow log on locally" Windows Local Security Policy

2- Share permission must allow authenticated uses

3- File security DACLs apply to authenticated uses

My problem was that my Local Security Policy did not "Allow log on locally" for normal Domain Users.

If you wanted to disable bb users access to network shares just deny/remove them from "Allow log on locally".

ahhh, good one!

I had only tested this for myself, an Enterprise Admin, on my test server. This is a very handy feature for people in that group.

It is odd that BBerry has gone to all of the effort to make this work for Admins but developed no management of this feature and has not developed a process for common restricted users to access shares. I would LOVE to make SOME shares available to SOME staff via their BBerry. I, like any good admin, would be extremely hesitant to give any user LOG ON LOCALLY permission.

I wonder if there is access for restricted domain users and share control, in the full version of BES?
