Is it possible to automatically detect when a Blackberry is in a Wi Fi area ?

AFAIK only if you have the connection details programmed into the device. You could, for example, configure to auto-connect to all Starbucks hot spots. But otherwise, no, you have to set up any new WiFi networks.
