Default How do I setup a device without using the workstation?

Please Login to Remove!

Here is how I setup a BB device before:

1. Add a new user into BES.
2. Install Blackberry Desktop Manager on user's workstation
3. Connect the device to the workstation, and the device will be linked w/ user's account.

Right now I have a dilemma, I need to assign a new BB to a remote user who has corp email account but does not have a workstation. Neglecting the functionality of local PIM sync, since he does not have a PC and will never need it, is it really nessasary that I have to create his profile on a workstation, assuming it is HIS computer and do the steps I describe above?

Can a BB device be setup without getting a workstation involved? I could connect the device to the BES directly, if that's what it takes, however I could not figure out how to process the setup that way.

Default Enterprise Wireless Activation

You can use Enterprise Wireless Activation. Do a search for it on the Blackberry site.

You need BES 4.0 to do a wireless activation.

Thanks T-Roy. I should have mentioned that my BES is version 3.6.

So the only way to do this, in my scanario, is to setup a PC, logon as that user, configure Outlook, and physically sync the BB with the workstation?

Unfortunately that is the case, yes. This is THE main reason that my organization migrated to BES 4, to save us that hassle. We used to have one heck of a time getting things coordinated to perform an activation prior to being able to provision everything over the air.

As in your described scenario it was even MORE work when the user didn't even have a PC in the first place and we had to go through the motions in order to get things working.

Does BES 3.6 allow you to deploy from the admin computer like 4.0 does? According to the docs, that shouldn't need you to config Outlook.

1. I did not find this function and that is why I posted this article to ask..

2. According to BaronVonBB, I believe the answer to your question is "NO". I assume you get the quote of "deploy from the admin computer" from BES 4.0 or above?

You can set him up using the BES server, no desktop is needed.
