Default Transfering Information from One Blackberry to Another

Please Login to Remove!

I am on Cingular and have had a 7290 for nearly two years. I am (im)patiently waiting on a Pearl to be delivered today and I was wondering, is it possible to transfer information from the 7290 to the Pearl and how would I go about doing that? In particular, I have some e-mails I have saved and some pictures.

I have never used Blackberry Desktop - all of my synching with e-mail, calendar, contacts etc. has been ota.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

load the latest version of Desktop Manager, new app there called Switch Device Wizard. I have not used it yet (will be this week moving my wife's 7100 to 8100) but I have read good reports on this board that it works well, and importantly, was complete in moving settings, preferences, data, apps, etc.

I used Switch Device on the Desktop Manager to switch from my Cingular 7290 to a Pearl, and everything went off without a hitch!

Why would you need to do this if everything is synched wirelessly? (Assuming they are running a BES)

AFAIK, user settings and 3rd party software/settings will not be moved over to a new device wirelessly. Using DM for switching devices will also Enterprise-Activate the new device automatically.

Good question...glad you pointed that out. He very well might be on BES since he did say all had been synching OTA in the past. But if he has personal programs on the device, personal settings, etc., the Switch Device app will get that all that.

My settings (for the most part) came over when I migrated from a 7100I to a 7130E. To make for a quicker switch, make sure and delete your call log.

lol - that is the best advice you can ever give anyone! Cleaning out your call log will dramatically speed up the transfer process...

So will this work going from a cingular 7290 to a 7100g? I need to keep the password keeper intact. Its hard to let go of the 7290, but my cousins recent hot dog grease got into the keys :( at the company picnic. The 7100g is a loaner from my boss.

I have used it & everything transfered perfectly. Apps & all.

The only problem for you is that it may not transfer the hot dog grease

Cheers

I should probably have been more specific. I am on a BES and from what I've seen so far (I received and had the Pearl set up yesterday afternoon) my settings transferred flawlessly ota. However, what didn't transfer were 1) e-mails saved on the BB including those from e-mail accounts I use through the BIS; 2) third party apps ( I NEED Texas Hold'em King 2!); and 3) pictures I saved on the BB. Those and similar items are what I would want to transfer over if possible.

Sorry for any confusion.

I haven't used the switch device wizard but it sounds like it would have handled everything for you. EA doesn't handle the items you listed, as you've found out. EA definitely won't handle your BIS accounts as it's a BES-specific feature.

Ha Ha thanks! It worked like a charm though for me, not all the apps followed. I reinstalled and bingo, yet going from 7290 to 7100g...I have big hands so searching for a new device.

Yep, the Switch Device Wizard as advised would have done all you needed.

I am trying to do the same thing which is to transfer all files/contacts from one blackberry to another. I have to return one blackberry tomorrow because of defect but I have no clue how to transfer the information.
I have a usb cable to connect the blackberry to my pc but that is where I get lost.
What is desktop manager and where can i download it? Also could someone post the steps needed to transfer the files?

Thanks

Shreky, I'm mobile right now so it's difficult to post a the exact link, but go to www.blackberry.com and get the Desktop Manager (or from your carrier's website support for your phone) and look for support and dowloads. Load it and follow the instructions for the Switch Device wizard. You'll need both BBs with you to do so.

If you don't already use Desktop Manager, you should, for syncing your calendar, contacts, etc. and for backing up your BB.

I am also planning to upgrade my 7290 to 8800. How do I make sure that all my personal data is removed from the old device?

Thanks.

I probably should have reported in earlier, but this worked great! Transferred my saved messages, applications, everything! Thanks all!
