Default Bold Browser vs iPhone Browser--How To Compete?

Please Login to Remove!

I have both the Bold and the iPhone 3GS. Both have 3G and both have WiFi. However, I must say here that the Safari browser kicks the pants off the Bold, mainly because I can go to any web page I want. For many websites I visit with my Bold, the device will not load any graphics (I just get boxes with tiny x's in them), and sometimes I can't even load the page--Java script issues?

I love both devices, but I get the impression that the Bold has severe limitations on its browser. I wonder if my Bold acts this way in my settings, or if that is what I must accept with any Bold. I bought my device used, so maybe the previous owner tinkered with the device so it won't work as well as I would like to see; perhaps a complete device wipe may help and start it all over from scratch.

Here is the question for the seasoned Bold users: do any of you guys have web browsing capabilities that comes close to the Safari browser (i.e., you can visit any web page you want and have no problems with graphics, html and the like)? I want to know because I am wondering if my browsing capabilities are due to the Bold's limitations, or if I have something wrong in my settings.

No BlackBerry web browser (currently) will even come close to competing with the web browser in the iPhone.
There's simply no comparison.

No amount of fiddling with settings will change that.

Agree with above.

You can try Opera Mini which is slightly better than the built in browser but will still not touch the iPhone.

Try the BOLT beta browser, it works better than Opera.

I have to say that the "tiny x" issue occurs with my iphone 3g as well, at least from time to time.

However - Safari > BB Browser.

Default Advantage Bold!

I have an iphone 3G and a Bold. When I recently upgraded the firmware of the iphone from 3.01 to 3.1, the upgrade trashed my wifi capability. Apparently this is a known issue that Apple has been keeping very quiet about and it has been occurring to hundreds of users from the 3.0 upgrade onwards. They don't know how to fix it, so the problem "does not exist!

So the iphone browser is good if you are one of the lucky ones whose iphone can access wifi networks.

A fairer comparison would be to compare the iphone to the new Storm because the full screen makes a huge difference in browsing capabilites.

and as obentu says . . . .the Bolt Browser is very good!

Wirelessly posted (bold 9000)

Browser on the I phone is a lot better. But like everyone we pick what options are best for our use and take the downfalls that come with it. Yes the bolds browser isn't the best but you can hit 99 percent of web sites with it. I'm after overall function and the email puts the bold over the top for me. iphones Also for me the biggest downfall is the large screen I would always have to wipe off. Not saying iphone isn't a great phone just not for me.

I have an idea: go to this website called "google" and enter "bolt browser".

What I meant was this: how do I install it from my home computer? Or do I access the website directly from my Bold and install from there? I suppose that the latter is the correct way. Anyhow, I'll check it out.

I tried bolt and it only worked on wifi, not 3g. Went back to the BB browser.

With RIM's recent acquisition of Torch Mobile bodes well for browser development.

I'm coming from the iPhone to the Bold (UPS is coming tomorrow or Thursday) but when I tried the browser I found it to be pretty good. It is not comparable to the iPhone - but it's not terrible.
