Default copying files to media card in Ubuntu

Please Login to Remove!

I've got a question for those of you who run Ubuntu (I've seen that some of you run it). I installed barry and it seems to charge fine (bcharge finds it..) but after I copy songs over to the BlackBerry/Media/Songs/ folder they immediately are deleted after I unplug my 8100. It seems like they are transferred as I can browse the files after they are copied over, but only as long as I don't unplug the usb cord.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

This smells like a cache-write issue (or rather, the lack thereof); copy your files, then type "sync" on the cmdline then unplug -- are the files now on the device as intended?

thanks, worked perfectly! I should've guessed something like this, but now I know.

*nod* You'll want to find the proper unmount methodology for Ubuntu (sorry, I'm a Fedora nut) that does this more gracefully; on my systems the device mounts right on the desktop automagically, at which point I rightmouse on the icon an "Unmount Volume" for a clean removal. This issues a cache flush and runs the 'umount' command behind the scenes.

If nothing else, you should at last unmount the volume (which would auto-sync as per the above reply), something like 'umount /mnt/usbdisk' -- wherever that /dev/sda? device inserted itself onto your filesystem. See this reference I wrote here:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/linu...age-linux.html

There are some examples of bad output from just yanking the USB cable out, and good output when you properly unmount your USB device.

After fooling around with things I have seen that the Amarok music player can deal with the unmounting directly. It is also able to sync songs with my pearl, which is something windows media player wasn't able to do back when I was using it....man, no real reason to have windows installed on my dual boot anymore (I only used it to connect to my bberry once a month). I guess I was just too used to the windows way of doing things when trying to send songs to my phone. Thanks for your help.

*off topic*

I am on 7.04 and have not used windows in years... I am very curious how the Windows Migration Tool worked, as I think 7.04 is about as close to a windows replacement we have seen yet for Linux...

Thanks
