Default Strange keypad issue.

Please Login to Remove!

My fone has developed an issue which started about 2 days ago.

1. The "o" key no longer works unless it is typed slowly (about a second) after another letter.
2. The phone only recognizes 1 button at a time. eg., holding alt and pressing v results in nothing, but pressing alt then pressing v gets you a question mark. Same for both shift keys
3. When the phone's backlight goes off, the only thing that will light it back up is pressing and holding the end/power (or the Send, menu & back) button for 1 full second.
4. When I'm typing and I press 'del', it either does nothing or erases the entire line.

The phone has not been dropped or exposed to liquids or anything. Did a battery pull several times, no improvement. Also did an OS upgrade and still no improvement. Anyone has any ideas?

Just a wild guess, but I suspect you have too many apps, pics, mp3's on your resulting in low device memory.

Did the device get wet or in contact with any moisture?

There are only 5 downloaded apps on the fone.
I added no music to the fone (and have never done so).
I have 3 ringtone files.
I have less than 15 photos.
The fone has never been wet and my fingers don't visibly sweat enough for me to think that it is a moisture issue.

What I've since realised tho is that the delete key erases letters without having to fully press the key. Basically, if i slightly brush (and NOT press) the delete key with my finger, it starts to delete. As a result, since the 'L' and 'P' keys are closest to delete, i have trouble typing those letters now.

At one point, the keypad worked okay for about 3 days and then it played the fool again.

I'm assuming that there's an issue with the keypad contacts or something.

It sure does sound like moisture exposure, or the effects of moisture exposure in the past that are now showing ip. Have you had the device since new out of the box, or did you acquire it secondhand?

It was new when I bought it.. I've had it for a year now. Can a moisture issue be fixed?

First step when you have exposed the device to liquid, or you realize you are seeing symptoms of moisture contamination, is to remove the battery and dry the device, and hope you took action fast enough. If there has been hardware damage from electrical shorting or corrosion, then AFAIK the device is totaled.

Some have advised that a device may be ok after getting wet and then being dried, but then later on showing the performance affects of water damage. I tend to believe that is entirely possible as corrosion starts and progresses over time.

This problem now occurs with practically my entire keypad. My 8520 is almost like a touchscreen now... I don't even need to press the keys for it to begin typing... If i slightly run my finger over most keys now, they type instantly.

Moisture/liquid damage.

Apparently you don't recognize when the exposure occurs. Could be something as slight as a sweaty pocket. Figure it out and then get another device. Yours is FUBAR.

I have similar problems with my 8530, the letter R has not worked for 2 weeks, and has only worked intermittently over the past 6 months. The letter E has only worked intermittently over the past 6 months. Sometimes the #3 does not work which makes it hard to make a phone call. The track ball only works on the home page. And oddly, about a month ago every time I tapped my phone it called the first person in my address book. It has not gotten wet. I was told by a Verizon rep that there were known problems with a few lots of this phone. Does anyone have any information on this?
