Default BES Express Install - SQL Express Issue

Please Login to Remove!

Hi guys,

This is repeated from the General Forum, sorry missed this forum here, feel free to delete the other!

Just trying to setup BES Express on our server but get to the SQL point and it can't seem to connect to SQL.

I told it to create a new DB. There is a SQL Express install there already doing Sophos PureMessage but for the life of me cannot get it to create another DB.

At the "Database Information" screen I give it the instance where i created the DB. s0378-0592-ex01\SOPHOS and then the DB name BESmgmt but I always get the error "An attempt to connect to the database was unsuccessful. Check the logs..."

The log instance says:
[30000] (03/09 13:47:18.911):{0x1704} <4>Mar 09 13:47:18 S0378-0592-EX01 {0xA6C} 0345: (#25137) {ConnectionItem::ConnectToDB} Failed to connect. Connection string is Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Server=S0378-0592-EX01\BESmgmt;Database=BESmgmt;Network=dbmssocn;Tru sted_Connection=Yes

Tried syncing the service and all is fine but still no SQL connection.

Any ideas going crazy trying all the different ways...any help much appreciated.

Thanks

George

Oooh not sure on that one. The install is being done as enara\administrator though and that does have permissions.

Will check and try again.

By default I believe there is only one administrator account to the sql database (might only allow one), and that is the account that was use to install sql server express. If you login with the BESAdmin account (or what ever it is called), and run the sql server express configuration application (under the start menu folder) it will allow you to add the account to the "administrator's group". I ran into that problem myself.

Yes it is a Domain Admin.

Triforce666 do you mean login to the server as BESAdmin to run the install and then login to SQL and add it to the administrators group?

When you install BESx on a new server that does not have SQL Express installed it will add the current user to the "sql administrators" group. If you reuse a sql express server it will not add the current user automatically. There is a configuration utility in the Microsoft SQL Express start menu fold that allows you to change the "sql administrator" account.

When working on the BES do you not always log in as BESAdmin rather than a domain admin account?

No it's the same one as the Exchange Server so normally login as Administrator.

No SQL Express is already installed so what do I need to do to add the account. Its using Windows creditials at the moment so do I need to change that?

Sorry it seems simple but never had this much trouble installing something like this before, its probably me rathjer than the BES.

make sure your BESAdmin account has local admin (put it in the local administrators group), login with it, under Microsoft SQL Server 2005\Configuration Tools\SQL Server Surface Area Configuration utility.

install MUST be done while logged in as besadmin. besadmin can't be domain admin. watch the install vids and read docs for how to config besadmin account.
